Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 15, 2012 11:12 am Just wondering if you can help give us a ballpark figure on adding downlights to our new (as yet unbuilt) single storey house. We are trying to figure out how much we'll save by having the project builder just put in the one batton light per room, and we add the downlights later. So, basically, if we add four downlights to a room (and replace the batton in the centre with another downlight), what would our cost be to get the appropriate wiring/transfomers & CFL downlights. It's a total of approx 28 downlights throughout the house, possibly a day & half job I'm guessing ? The project builder is charging $95 per d/light so trying to figure the difference. Any help appreciated !! Re: Any sparkies out there ? Adding downlights in a new buil 2Feb 26, 2012 9:18 pm Ruff back of the envelope, If your electrician like me thinks the terminals are all to small and putting a socket at each light point is a good idea then it will be a little more. $16 - 15W white down light (depending on brand etc) $5 - Surface mounted socket $3 - Molded plug fly lead $10 - Recessed lighting guard - assuming you have loose fill insulation $35.75 - 1/2 hour per light $10 - Cable and clips etc $79.75 a light, so call it $80 per light, depending on how many lights are in a row etc, takes time to measure the beams and check for obstructions above the plaster and make sure all the lights are in a straight line! And if your in Victoria, a COES, I don't recall exactly how much, but about $10, but only one for the whole job! So you could possibly save $15 a light, don't sound like much, but 28 lights makes it $420 Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
