Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 19, 2012 11:17 am Hi all, I moved into my new home in December 2010 after going through quite a lengthy building/PCI/handover process. The "3 month maintenance" items for my builder to fix were only finalised in October of 2011. Anyway, I have recently had a new addition to the family: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ he's an inside cat and the other night he disappeared. After a bit of frantic searching I heard some plaintive mews coming from underneath my oven Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Upon further inspection I discovered that there is a massive gap in the kitchen cabinetry; there is the kickboard under the oven and the surround of the oven(as seen in the picture) but there is no piece parallel to the floor to seal off the gap between the two (I'm hoping that makes sense). Thus the underneath of the oven is open for dust/dirt/small felines/god only knows what else to get in. The good news is I managed to extricate the kitten with a ham reward So my question is; is this something the builder/cabinetmaker should remedy or is it standard practice to have big gaps in kitchen cabinetry (albeit ones you can't see unless you lie on the floor)? Thanks in advance for your responses Re: Gaps in kitchen cabinetry 3Jan 20, 2012 10:32 am I'm guessing here but I think the gap is either cost cutting or perhaps a type of venting for any external oven heat. I suggest pushing a piece of plastic mesh into the gap (should it actually be for venting) so Felix wont stray in there again Arfur Re: Gaps in kitchen cabinetry 4Jan 20, 2012 10:58 am In our kitchen, there is a small gap between the top of the kickboard and the bottom of the cabinetry (only seen when I lie on the floor). It's only about 8mm though. Not so sure this is normal but it doesn't bother me now. I gather your gap is quite a bit larger if you dear feline squeezed through!
