Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 12, 2012 8:48 pm Hi, Just wondering whether anyone has any opinions on what's the best wooden flooring option to go for in an extension that I'm building. Is it ok to lay wood over concrete and if so what's the best system so as not to get warping etc. Thanks, Rebecca Re: Wooden flooring 3Jan 12, 2012 11:44 pm Stewie D The best way is to screw 40mm battens to the concrete slab at 450mm centres and then to nail ( secret nail or exposed ) and glue the T & G floorboards to that. Stewie I think Stewie is correct here as it provides a buffer againsts inconsistencies in the slab. My wife and i just built a home with bamboo T&G floating floors and the slightest rise or dip in the concrete makes the floor boards creek. I suppose this would be ok if the slab was dead level prior to installation... In regards to warping, cupping etc, it is ok to lay a floating floor as long as all moisture has left the slab and membranes also suitable expansion joints installed. Cheers Re: Wooden flooring 5Jan 14, 2012 12:16 pm A floating floor is just that. They are usually sheets of timber ply or other that look like T & G that clip together and laid over some sort of thin 5-10mm foam underlay. They are not glued , screwed or nailed to the floor at all. T & G timber flooring is nailed to joists /battens etc and much better in my opinion although quite a bit more expensive ( you have to allow for sanding and sealing as well ). Floating floors are a cheaper alternative but the concrete needs to be finished pretty well before laying the sheets. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 6208 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15923 |
