They are usually sheets of timber ply or other that look like T & G that clip together and laid over some sort of thin 5-10mm foam underlay. They are not glued , screwed or nailed to the floor at all. T & G timber flooring is nailed to joists /battens etc and much better in my opinion although quite a bit more expensive ( you have to allow for sanding and sealing as well ). Floating floors are a cheaper alternative but the concrete needs to be finished pretty well before laying the sheets.
