Just wondering how difficult it would be to replace with something more modern looking such as tiles or would painting be an option?

Painting over terrazzo I would not recommend, it would look yucky. I'm thinking that if the door step is original fitment, when it was installed it would have matched the modernity of the house. If you put something different there, would you then be creating a mismatch? Personally, I would restore the terrazzo as a feature. Just my opinion of course.
