Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 05, 2011 8:39 pm Heya. This one isn't directly related to a domestic building issue, but I am a bit wary of a structural problem in my workplace if anyone can help. Currently I'm working in the office of the gym my boss owns, and the spinbikes are kept on the topmost floor. I am directly beneath this room, and every week when the spin classes take place the ceiling moves. Not even slightly; it's really obvious and it creaks loudly with the weight. My boss insists that he checked the floorboards upstairs and they seem fine, but our ceiling is plastered and that's the part I can see moving. It's not sagging but the plastic ceiling panels move with the rest of it. The gym only moved to this location in the past year, and I imagine the place used to be some kind of factory back in its day. Since my boss is a corner-cutting slap-dash type of guy, I don't imagine he gave much thought to whether or not the building was appropriate for this kind of thing or could take this kind of punishment; they've experienced two major leaks since March. I actually move from under the flourescent lights whenever the classes are on and am seriously considering bringing a hard-hat with me to work! Can anyone give me any input on this, regarding the problem or what to do about it? Thanks. Unless he has xray vision he wont be able to see the beams supporting the 'moving' floor. What you MUST do ASAP is phone Worksafe in your State, explain your case and ask them to do a spot audit on his premises. I suspect they will check all his gym equipment too -- especially if you suggest some of it may not meet safety standards Your boss may accuse you of whistle-blowing and sack you. Then you can take him before the Equal Opportunity Commission or Fair Work Aus for unfair dismissal. You may get Worksafe to protect you by hinting it was a gym member in your office that noticed the ceiling moving Good Luck Arfur Re: Questionable Ceiling 3Dec 06, 2011 5:48 am Call worksafe hotline. Chances are your boss has no clue weather its safe or not. I would have it checked out as soon as you can. If something were to happen it would happen without much warning. You and everyone in the building could get crushed when you could have stopped it. Re: Questionable Ceiling 5Dec 16, 2011 7:59 am Thanks for the help guys. I'll take what you've said onboard. But this week I couldn't see any movement at all really. It was a really noticable difference. I haven't asked my boss what's going on, but perhaps he took what I said onboard and either checked what was going on underneath or moved the spinbikes away from the weak area.
