Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 08, 2011 8:36 pm I just cleaned the grout haze off my new outdoor tiles with vinegar and the beige grout has turned white. It doesn't seem to wash off though when wet it is the right colour. When it dries it is white again. What have I done? The tiler said to wash them with vinegar. Re: Grout turned white 2Dec 10, 2011 3:10 am Hi sounds like your Tiler has given you the wrong advice in my opinion. As a licensed tiler and waterproofer, I believe vinegar is acidic and you should never wash a floor just grouted with an acidic based product. The correct method is to wash it over with just clean water. I made shore when grouting I changed the water to reduce the amount of haze left behind. Being outside I also advised the client to seal the grout which then I made sure the tiles were extra clean as to achieve the best result every time. If in doubt find out the grout that was used and call the company who makes it and they'll probably put you onto a Rep who will then more than likely tell you exactly what I have just done, an acidic base product will discolor your grout by eating into it and the only way to fix this will be to remove the grout and start again. Hope this has helped, good luck let us know how you go Re: Grout turned white 4May 11, 2012 6:30 pm For anyone who is interested in the outcome of this query: The grout company adviser pointed out that vinegar is not a great thing to use on coloured grout since it bleaches / etches it. He thought the only way to fix it would be to sand off the surface of the grout which has been etched by the vinegar. Would have been ok with white grout but not coloured. Thanks splashers, that makes sense.
