Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 22, 2011 4:56 pm Hi I am hoping someone will be able to assist me. I am in the process of getting my house demolished and have got the watter, gas and electricity disconnected, however not the overhead telephone cable. Are you able to cut this cable off yourself as I had tenants in the property and dont know what there telphone number was or if they had a telephone line. If I am not able to cut this, who do I contact and approx how long does this take? Any help will be great. Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 2Nov 22, 2011 7:24 pm Hi Call Telstra on 1800 810 443 and selection option 1 - When you get through to the consultant explain that you are demolishing a house and need the overhead lead-in to be disconnected. They should be able to help you out. Paul Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 3Nov 22, 2011 10:01 pm Hi Paul Thanks for your help. Have called Telstra and technician is going to notify me tomorrow with an update. Just need this done very soon. Hoping they won't take too long or else might just see if i can cut it myself or get an electrician to do it for me. Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 4Nov 22, 2011 10:12 pm When we demolished, the demo guy's just cut it themselves and we didn't need to get a Telstra tech out to do it. Apparently, it's low voltage (that's what the demo guy's told me) and was no issue for them to do. I'd check with your demo company, but it may have changed in the 3 years since I demoed, or could be different state to state.... Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Little wonder that company has such a poor public image in so many ways. When I questioned the length of time and the need for someone to come and quote, the Telstra employee said all that I needed was an electrician with an Austel licence to do the removal. In the end, the demolition company did the job and left the wire coiled neatly around the pole it is connected too. I don't know how they did it and absent any evidence to the contrary, I am assuming they used a suitably licensed electrician. I have notified Telstra that the wire is left coiled around the pole at ground level and despite their employees saying "that is not good enough" and "someone will be out to fix that", months later, it is still around the pole at ground level. Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 6Nov 23, 2011 5:14 am Hi A registered cabler (cabling registration replaced Austel licensing some years ago) cannot modify a carriers facilities without written authorization. However, Telstra have provided a document (the "A2A") which provides this authorization for a number of common situations. I wasn't thinking about it last night when I wrote my response, but I checked this morning, and sure enough, your case is covered. Refer to page 32 of http://www.telstra.com.au/smart-community/download/document/facilities-alteration-0609.pdf?red=/smartcommunity/assets/facilityalteration_1108.pdf and you will find the instructions that any registered cabler can follow to disconnect your lead-in. Many, but not all, electricians hold a calling registration. So, if Telstra are going to take too long or charge too much you can arrange for a cabler to do it under the A2A. Paul Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 7Nov 23, 2011 7:45 am Thanks for all your help Ray153 and Paul. It is much appreciated. If i dont hear anything today from Telstra, I might just ask my mate who is an electrician to do it. Thanks again for your advise and help. Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 8Nov 23, 2011 7:56 am You can get an electrician to cut the cable. I personally (and yes, I'm not supposed to do it) would just cut the cable and coil it up neatly. All you need to do is make sure the four (or more) wires inside the cable are separated so they don't touch. I would just bend them back and then tape them to the cable. Also keep the open end of the cable out of water/dirt. The highest voltage is only 48 volts (a bit more if the phone is ringing). So keep away from the conductors, but nothing dangerous there. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Disconnection of Overhead Telephone Cable - NEED HELP!!! 9Nov 23, 2011 8:04 am Hi Casa Thanks for that. If and when telstra give me a call, ill ask them whats involved if they were to do it and if it costs too much, might just get my mate to do it when he is in the area. Getting the hose demolished in a week or so, so want to get this sorted ASAP. If its cutting it fine, might just do it myself. Hi, Can anyone give me approx. price for overhead cupboards.
