Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 26, 2011 7:40 pm Hi, I am new to posting on this forum but have been reading a number of threads and have found it to be really helpful. My question is we have an acre block and when we bought it just after xmas we had a soil test done by a local company in our area and it came back as E. No biggy as most soil in this area is an E and our previous was a H. However we have since had another soil test done as required by M****** by a much larger company and it has come back as a H. While this should save us some $ we are confused as to why two companies have come up with differing results. The local one drilled two holes and the one used by M did 3. I am worried about laying down the wrong slab, or is this a common occurance and we should go with the H rating and I am worrying over nothing. Any answers would be appreciated. Tash and Stu Re: Which soil test is right? 2Oct 26, 2011 8:16 pm Soil is the most variable aspect of the whole construction process but you only test less than 1/100 of 1% so its likely that results can vary depending on the test hole. There is more information here: http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=347 A smaller builder may take a more conservative approach when designing as a failure of a slab to someone who has a small turnover can break the business while a bigger builder can stand an occasional loss because the saving will be offset by the cost saving on hundreds of slabs. Re: Which soil test is right? 5Oct 27, 2011 10:49 pm The soil tests were done in different spots, one tester drilled in one spot 20 metres in from front and the other about another 10 metres in in the middle of the block. The other tester did three holes, one at 17 metres back from front and 10 metres in from side, other around 25 metres back and 15 in from side and the last one was done 35 metres back and 20 metres in. The developer has stated that houses should be 15 metres in. Should we just be cautious and pay for the E slab, I am so worried about the wrong slab leading to movement problems while my hubby is not so much Re: Which soil test is right? 6Oct 28, 2011 8:07 am I would err on the side of caution if there's any chance you have extremely reactive clay with lots of movement inside or close to the building envelope, but that's just me... Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Thanks for your reply. I will just wait and see I guess.
