Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 21, 2011 8:40 am Hi, we have a very small back yard but our council insists on every new house build having a rain water tank. To save on space we had our rainwater tank put under where the deck will be going. It has a pump as it is connected to one of our toilets. As soon as the pump was installed it was making a loud screetching noise and I said to the plumber "is it going to be making that noise all the time" and he told me that all pumps make that noise and it will stop once settled and will only make the noise occasionally. So it is almost 24 hours later and the pump is still screetching - we have 10 seconds of screech then 15 seconds of a break and then 10 seconds of screetch again - constantly. I am just waiting on the knock on my door from my neighbours it is so loud. If i stand at my front door I can hear it and it is by the back door. Is it right that it should be taking so long to "settle"? Will it make that noise until the tank is full (might be weeks or months!!!) Thank you in advance! Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 3Oct 21, 2011 8:57 am We rely on tankwater-no town water here; we have no problem with pump noise whatsoever. Pumps should not screech! We didnt have a choice with our council otherwise I would have chosen the solar hot water! Another question - if we were to create some sort of box cover what would be a good sound insulator? Dee - I had no idea there would be screetching. I have visions of us sitting on our lovely new deck barely able to hear each other because of the horrendous noise!! I seem to only find out about things the hard way these days Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 5Oct 21, 2011 9:01 am I would be contacting the pump manufacturer ( name should be on the pump or in the warranty paperwork supplied to you) and explaining the situation to them. If it is running constantly then you may have a problem! In my experience the problems could be but not limited to: A leak some where or a faulty pump The pump will run to keep the water pressure constant and will restart every time the pressure drops hope this is helpful Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 7Oct 21, 2011 11:13 am Dee we didnt purchase the pump, we got a plumber in and they supplied it so i think i will follow up with them. Matt the noise is constant ie; not just when we flush the toilet, but has been going for 24 hours every 10 seconds. Driving me crazy really!! Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 8Oct 21, 2011 11:49 am Lee, Have a listen to the pump when it stops If you can hear water flowing is it would most likely be going in the wrong direction through the non return valve which could be caused by dirt or foreign material holding it open or just a faulty pump but a leak as i mentioned earlier could be the cause although for it to be running that often it would have to be a large leak Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 9Oct 21, 2011 8:29 pm There is no water running sound at all. I have arranged for the plumber to come out again tomorrow and they told me to turn it off at the power. What makes no sense to me is the plumber heard it and told me it was normal.. ? So will see what he says tomorrow!! Thanks for all of your input! Re: Rainwater Tank pump noise! 10Oct 21, 2011 8:35 pm Lee-even if the plumber supplied the pump they should leave you with the manual which comes with it. This is costing a bomb so I'm fairly unimpressed! 18 74480 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair But if it is a ground level open pit, then it is not a charged system. No surprises there.
