Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 06, 2008 9:27 pm Hi all,
We are going an extra 2m on our garage, but if funds allow, may go to a full triple. Can you have a single, very wide garage door? Or, do people generally go for one double & one single door? I'd prefer one long door - but not if they are hugely expensive or prone to mechanical problems due to size. Cheers. I think the max a garage door will go to (in a single) is 6m wide....That's all we were allowed at our old place (B&D door) The mechanism/springs are extra heavy duty to cope with the weight... one spring snapped after 3 years.... I'd say stick with one standard or even wider double and a single (or even a wider single) if you have the room... Youu could possibly look at an industrial style door, they will have the widths but it depends on if you like the styles or not and whether Burbank will offer you the option??? Re: Who went for a triple garage? 3Feb 06, 2008 9:38 pm Thanks Phoenix - I'l drop them a line in the morning. I would prefer the look one really wide door. We shall have to see what the costs and options are.
I dont know if we would use the extra garden more than the garage? We'll see. It would be nice to have somewhere to park the jetski though - ( once I convince Emma to let me have one that is ). LOL Re: Who went for a triple garage? 5Feb 06, 2008 10:08 pm We went triple. Had a triple on our last house so couldn't go without one now. I've been spoilt. Re: Who went for a triple garage? 7Feb 07, 2008 7:31 am I had thought about the beam size. Could be big bucks that.
I'll see what Burbank have to say about it, the sales agent we have been dealing with is fantastic - I bombard her with about 20 questions a week, and she always gets back to me with answers, she's very efficient and polite to boot. Just hope they keep that kind of service up during the build. Re: Who went for a triple garage? 8Feb 07, 2008 9:51 am Not only the size of the beam, but imagine how much harder everything has to work to get one car in or out. Generally triple garages house a trailer, boat, caravan or is just for extra space. In other words another vehicle that doesn't get used much. I would definitely on have a double and single door. Even if you can get a one piece triple, I would imagine you will be getting it repaired a lot more than double doors do... I've never seen a triple garage door. Most people seem to have one double and one single. My FIL keeps his bulldozer behind the single..... I think in Oz houses you're going to need a triple garage if you are used to having a loft in the UK like you might be as without a loft storage space for junk is reduced. Emma may think this is a good thing Simon Building an architect designed home out of Insulated Concrete Forms on acreage in semi-rural SE Melbourne. Emma may think this is a good thing Simon I think the one double & one single makes sense, just not sure what it will look like with the rest of the house. Anyway, may be academic depending on what cost the builder comes back with. Re: Who went for a triple garage? 11Feb 08, 2008 6:13 am Back in Brsbane we had a half acre block and a nearly 40 square single-storey house, so a triple garage seemed a good idea at the time. It was, from the outside, a double and a single, however inside it was a triple, with no separating wall. The "single" part was my dh's workshop (he builds 1/6th scale radio-controlled planes so needs a fair bit of space) - even all our bikes had to go into the double - thank goodness we only had one car!
We are going to a double garage this time round. Partially because we will have less than half the land we had previously - we're building single-storey again - but we're having a workshop tacked onto the end of the garage. it'll be the size of a big double bedroom, so just enough space for dh to do his plane stuff, but only just. Having the triple garage would have used our budget in an area that nowadays doesn't seem as important as other areas of the house, however if it had been offered as a freebie by the builder, I think we would have considered it! Not that I've heard ot building firms offering "buy 2 get 1 free" where garages are concerned - although it's not a bad idea! But go the double and single doors....a triple door just sounds too risky insofar as damage is concerned. Fiona Re: Who went for a triple garage? 12Feb 08, 2008 8:43 am With our council, if you have a triple garage, one of the garage doors has to be set back slightly from the others to break up the front facade a bit. Therefore, even if a single large triple garage door is available, it's not allowed. Re: Who went for a triple garage? 13Feb 11, 2008 10:00 pm Love to have one but our land wasn't wide enough Re: Who went for a triple garage? 14Feb 12, 2008 8:51 am We extended the garage, but from the inside we will use it as a mud room (for shoes, coats, etc.).
Anyway, we might not have the money to buy another car... with a big mortgage very soon... and high interest rate! So our garage will accommodate one car and lots of bikes . ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
