Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 06, 2011 8:55 pm So, we moved in on the 1st July and we don't yet have a bill. Starting to get a little worried as we've paid our second gas bill, don't want a $1000 electricity one How long should it take for the first one? They probably haven't had the meter read yet - it happened to us when we moved into our current rental a few years back now... Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Our first bill was around $2.5k and they gave us almost 4mths to pay for it (and a $150 discount due to their error LOL). Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Electricity bill, we don't have one yet... 5Oct 07, 2011 7:39 am We moved in July 7 and haven't had a bill either. When we phoned Origin (for solar panel stuff), they said we weren't on the system - but it seems we should've given our lot number - worth a try? if you can be bothered hanging on for 90 minutes ;((( Re: Electricity bill, we don't have one yet... 6Oct 07, 2011 8:15 am While it's in your interest to contact them and ask where your bill is, my understanding is that they can only back-bill you for 12 months (in Vic, your state may vary). Here is the relevant section of the Victorian Energy Code: 6.2 Undercharging (a) If a retailer has undercharged or not charged a customer, the retailer may recover the amount undercharged from the customer, subject to the following limits: • if the undercharging resulted from a failure of the retailer’s billing systems, the retailer may recover no more than the amount undercharged in the 9 months prior to the date on which the retailer notifies the customer that undercharging has occurred; • otherwise, the retailer may recover no more than the amount undercharged in the 12 months prior to that date. Re: Electricity bill, we don't have one yet... 7Oct 07, 2011 8:47 am Yes that;s right. Here in SA they can only back bill you for 9 months (or it might be 12 ??) Friends of ours have been in their new house now for 18 months and still no bill. They put away money for what they thought each quarter would be for that first 12 months, now they put away nothing and just love the fact that they are getting FREE juice ! Wort case is they eventually get sent a bill, but just a mx for the 12 months, which they have put aside. They did nothing wrong, and it's not illegal. I would suggest that you keep very ,very quite about it, make NO phone calls, and put away money for when it does come. After 12 months you are laughing all the way to the bank. Hellloooo-you have already billed us once! Finally received a $700 bill for just over 6 months use ( we are a totally electric household) of which $100 was service charges. They had advised that we could have longer to pay due to their error, however we had been putting money away knowing that we would have to pay it whenever it turned up! My family kept joking that the bill was going to be so huge that it would come in an armoured car! Ducted a/c, five plasma tvs, 3 computers, a clothes drier and two huge fridges as well as electric range cooker = a massive bill you would think. So when the $2k-ish bill came with a reduced amount and longer payment term due to their "error" we couldn't stop laughing!! And then on top of that two weeks later we received a cheque from them for $700-ish for our solar rebate - again we laughed ourselves stupid! Some things are worth waiting for.
