Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 06, 2011 6:23 pm We have just moved into our new house 5 weeks ago. Today we got our first electricity bill and it was $1100! The bill is for 3 months but we were only living there for 4 weeks of the bill. The tradies etc used lights while they were working sometimes I guess but it still would not have been like a normal family usage. We have downlights through the hallway and in the kitchen/living areas. Stupidly we had not changed all of the other lights over to eco lights, we just had the standard builder cheapies in. We have a great reverse cycle ducted air con system but only used that about 5 times for a couple of hours. Our electricity bill at our old house was always about $300-$400 a quarter so I am having a heart attack!! Our new house is slightly bigger than the old house but not much. Do you think it is the downlights that would be so expensive to run? Re: How much is your electricity bill with downlights? 3Oct 06, 2011 7:59 pm Have you contacted your supplier and queried the bill? Does it include conection costs? Count up your lights, work out how long they are on for and do some sums. Re: How much is your electricity bill with downlights? 5Oct 06, 2011 8:51 pm Thanks for your responses. I have just noticed that the first reading was an estimate, they assumed it started at zero. Would it always start at zero? It is saying we used 3446kwh for the quarter. Based on what our meter says today, for the last 2 weeks since the last reading we have used 75 percent less a day than we did in the quarter we are being billed for, when we werent even living there for 2 of the 3 months! I will call them tomorrow to see what they say. Thanks again Re: How much is your electricity bill with downlights? 6Oct 08, 2011 8:22 pm Your builder should have been paying the electricity bills during construction - unless you're an owner-builder. Check your contract. It does sound excessive. 7 12028 I thought this would be a popular question but I haven't been able to find any similar posts. Perhaps I'm wording my searches wrong?
