Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 06, 2011 3:16 pm hi, I'm not sure if i am posting in the right area, but i really need some help fitting glass shelves and weight issues. I brought a glass book shelf a while ago that has 5 glass shelves. Each shelf is 31.5 cm deep and 60.4 cm across. They are held into place by resting on suction cups ( one on each corner). The suction cups are fitted into the iron structure of the book case. My first problem is working out the glass thickness to calculate the weight load i can place on the shelves. I measured the literal thickness from the glass top to the bottom and its 5mm. I want to put my daughters fish tank on the middle shelf and removed the top two, the tank will weight about 36 kilos. Can someone please let me know whether this is a bad idea or whether i can place two glass shelves together (one on top of the other) to help increase the weight it can hold. I really appreciate any help and cant find anything on the net to help, thanks in advance. This will be a bad idea IMO Re: HELP with glass shelves Please! 3Oct 06, 2011 10:28 pm chrisandkate jonny124 They are held into place by resting on suction cups the tank will weight about 36 kilos The only 2 things that matter here. This will be a bad idea IMO Further to that I would not have any decent sized fish tank placed anywhere that does not involve the tank being supported from below on all four sides (unless you want your fishies wriggling around on the floor at some point), so I'd never put anything heavier than a small fishbowl or a very small fish tank on any sort of shelf. Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Re: HELP with glass shelves Please! 4Oct 07, 2011 8:34 am Can you post a picture? Resting "on" suction cups implies the corners of the shelf are sitting on top of something, rather than being held by suction alone. Putting a fish tank on it !! ? A definite NO. Also if the glass shelve holding the tank were to collapse, it would take with it all the shelves below it as well - quite an expensive mess. FWIW, stick to putting books on a book shelve, and get a purpose built fish tank stand. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: HELP with glass shelves Please! 7Oct 07, 2011 12:47 pm Thank you everyone for you replies, i did have a strong gut feeling this was a stupid question to begin with. Someone asked for a picture http://www.google.com.au/imgres?q=sucti ... r:14,s:123 Thats what the suction cups look like they are glued and set into holed drilled in the iron bar. So there are two iron bars running from the front to the back of the shelf with two suction cups on both support bars (one on each corner of the glass panel). I think it is the safest option to get a stand of some sort that is made for much more weight than the tank, considering its my daughters room i would rather not wake up to a scene from finding Nemo. Not only will i have water damaging my roof upstairs , my daughter may also get some funny ideas. Thanks everyone.
