Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 25, 2011 12:40 pm Our house has walls which are built on blocks of sandstone. Whenever it rains etc the sandstone draws up the water and gets damp (as does the mortar between the stones). Is this a problem and is there anything that we can do about it? (I am wondering if it has contributed to the dampness problems we experience in the living area of the house). Re: Wet sandstone base 2Sep 26, 2011 10:43 am All sandstone foundation blocks suck up water to a degree depending on their hardness but it shouldn't be excessive. You may also need to install/replace or repair the damp proof course as well which stops the dampness rising any further. If you have a dampness problem under your house then you may have water ponding underneath it and may need to install a drain to take it away. How many sub-floor vents in the sandstone walls do you have around the outside ? You can increase these to help dry out underneath. Pictures help.
