I've just started contacting providers to find out what options we have for phone/broadband in our new house. We currently use phone + adsl broadband through optus. Optus have told us that we can only connect to cable at the new house - yet telstra have told us we can only connect to adsl! (adsl2 I think)
What are the benefits of going with either? Optus told me they would need to come out and do more work to put in the cable, whereas telstra could connect through the cabling the builder has already put in. We have paid the builder for the phone connection, already have the telstra box on the house plus 3 phone sockets! Not too keen to have more work done - how easy is it to go to cable and is it worth it?
Thanks for any thoughts!

If you're reasonably confident with technology and make a lot of phone calls, you could possibly save a little by going cable. That way you'd have no landline rental and use voip for phone calls.
Otherwise I'd definitely choose ADSL (ADSL2 if available) and go with either Internode or iiNet, or possible Netspace.
Optus and Telstra are by far the worst providers in terms of cost and service. Their business model relies on their "big name" brand awareness and the technical fears of average users.

Are you likely to want Pay TV at some stage? If so it may pay to look at cable internet and bundle it.
If your local telephone exchange can handle ADSL2 - and your house is not too far (say less than 3km - the closer the better) than you might want to look into ADSL2 - otherwise just go with Cable internet. Optus has recently increased the speed of Cable to something like 20Mbit/s - that's pretty much the same as ADSL2 speed I believe.
If looking at ADSL2 - don't forget to speak to iinet or internode - who are both highly respected.
You might want to check out whirlpool.net.au which is the best internet forum around. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ - ask your question in the most relevant sub groups in there.

well sort of - truth be told i hit the reply before your post CF and then got interrupted at work and by the time I hit post - you've already answered it (I didn't know).
Overall yeh I agree - what you said was pretty much the same - except I actually think Big Pond and Optus aren't as bad as you - and I also mentioned PayTV - and not VOIP.
95% of what you said - I did too - yeh I guess we're both in agreement which is of some benefit to the OP I suppose as there's at least two who are offering the same advice.

lilstevieWhat are these Telstra sockets/cable/box? Can I remove them? What are these Telstra sockets/cable/box? Can I remove them?
Older boxes had a dialup modem for the return path in the days before they had ethernet and wifi. As for the rest, even deenergised, you will require a licensed data…
