Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 31, 2006 1:18 pm Hi
When we moved into our new home **** damaged our floorboards in 2 rooms. The gouges are fairly deep and have removed the polish in places, and in others just dented the floor (not certain what wood but lovely honey coloured timber in our Califorian Bungalow circ. 1920). Not knowing much about this (although I once laid a recycled mahogany parquet floor!) I was wondering if patching was possible or if we'd need the whole floor done. In the 4x4 room the scratches extend about 1m in one patch (the worst). Any ballpark cost estimates? Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 2Aug 01, 2006 5:46 pm Does the gouge go deep into the timber or just flake off the surface polish?
Pretty big job to patch and it sounds like Karri timber which is sensational and virtually unavailable these days - especially in the size boards that would be there. If the scratches are less than 2mm deep (that is a very deep scratch) into the timber then a sand and polish will fix it and you will be up for about $30.00 per metre square for the work, so long as there is a reasonable amount to do - one or two rooms. Best to get a professional in, don't want to bugger those beautiful boards! Re: Damaged Floor Boards 3Aug 05, 2006 6:27 pm Thanks. In the worst place it's almost 2mm and semicircular (round metal legs of approx, 10cm diameter pushed along the floor) and the wood is quite exposed and slightly rough. The rest is, I think, quite surfacy and an easy sand and revarnish should do the job.
I thought they might be Karri and as they've are in great condition throughout thehouse I think we'll have to bite the bullet and get some professional quotes. Thanks again for your advice. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 4Aug 05, 2006 9:21 pm Karri is a darkish red/brown timber and is available. I sell the stuff and could run any size flooring in our mill to suit.
Honey coloured floor doesn't help too much as a description as it sounds like it has been coated with an oil-based polyurethane which gives a golden-honey hue to most timbers. Tallowood was extremely common in those times as flooring. You really need to take a sample to a timber specialist who will determine the species more from grain than colour. Any new boards will not match exactly as your old boards will have darkened with age. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 6Aug 05, 2006 11:16 pm Good work Dukekamaya. There are yards around that also have old boards in stock and they are mostly connected to demolition companies but if you can mill it then that is excellent. Karri boards in Vic match that description but maybe I have the species wrong - I would defer to you as a sawmiller on that one!
Bottom line, get a professional floor sander to look at it and if you are not sure then talk to two of them. From this distance my gut feeling is that it is all repairable. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 7Aug 08, 2006 7:45 pm Cheers Builda. Floor finishers generally know about floor finishing and are not timber specialists. I do not have an Karri flooring in stock but have sawn Karri which can be run into flooring in our mill.
The only way to determine the species is to take a piece to a timber specialist. We would generally put a piece through a thicknesser to clean it if the species wasn't obvious at first sight. Unfortunately I'm on the south coast (Nowra) and may be a little out of your way. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 8Aug 12, 2006 1:38 pm Hi, I have just discovered this forum and is is fabulous. We are preparing our house to sell. Can I ask a question on floor boards please?
Our dining room has become rather badly surface scratched and the varnish worn off from the chairs despite our best efforts to pad them. We dont want to go to any great expense, but what would be the best way to pretty them up for sale? Have no idea of what the boards are but they are over the original floor boards. Also, have an area in the kitchen that has become increasingly squeeky of late, what could be the cause of that? Hope you can help, you seem to be very knowledgeable. Thanks heaps. Re: Damaged Floor Boards 9Aug 12, 2006 9:32 pm There is not too much you can do to the floor short of a sand and refinish. At most you can mop on a floor polish/wax to freshen it up in the short term for sale.
Are the floor boards over a bearer and joist sub-frame or particle-board or slab?? If they are over joists you can get underneath and 'chock' the floor where it is dropping and squeeking. If the floor is over particle board and it has lifted you can drive a self-tapping screw to pull it tight to the particle board, which you will obviously have to filll with a wax or putty. To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
