Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 05, 2011 7:16 pm Just a question for those who have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles. Are your tiles all level? Or do some of your tiles look a little higher than others? Is this a common problem? What should i do? Should i speak to my builder about it? Can they do anything about it? Any feedback would be much appreciated! Regards 'H' Re: Anyone else have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles??? 3Sep 05, 2011 8:39 pm Huggy_B How high is the difference we are talking about? 1mm? 2mm? 5mm? 8mm? Probably 2mm to 3mm roughly Re: Anyone else have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles??? 4Sep 07, 2011 9:15 pm My last place i had them, 1mm yes 3mm i could have cut my foot on one. Im going with them again atm but paying for a better tiler so ill see what happens. Re: Anyone else have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles??? 5Sep 07, 2011 9:43 pm I haven't laid mine yet, but when I do I'll be using these: http://www.tilersonline.com.au/products/product/TT-LCWB?category=UNRJPTBO They were mentioned on another thread a while ago (which is where I learned about them), they basically guarantee that your tiles line up. If I was paying a tiler to lay the tiles, I would almost insist they use them. Although, from what I've noticed so far, Qld tilers do seem to be more 'advanced' than these ones here. Most tilers I spoke to became uneasy when I mentioned the wedges and noone wanted to use them, but without giving a proper explanation. Most tile shops also never heard of them . I got the name of one tiler who supposedly used them before, but he never called back. Plus, this one shop that does know about these systems is keeping this product hidden under the front counter, it's not hanging out there with all the other tiling gadgets and clips! And finally, they said that this system will add about at least $500-600 to the cost. In short, not easily doable if you are outside Qld (unless you want someone to practice using these on your house ). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Or do some of your tiles look a little higher than others? Is this a common problem? No, my concrete floor isn't 100% levelled, and i did not opt for screeding. some of my tiles look higher than others. What should i do? Should i speak to my builder about it? Can they do anything about it? 2mm is within building standard tolerance for floor tile, since you are the one paying, you can request for 100% perfect mirror like finish. but most tiler will tell you screeding is required for mirror like finish. my quote was $60 per m2 labour, screeding is another $30 per m2 on top. I did not do floor covering through builder, they do not offer 600 x 600 tiles. after moving in with all furniture in place, i could hardly see any imperfection. edit: screeding may raise your floor level, it may create a problem where tiled area and carpet area meet, how thick can you go with carpet installation? When you have the tiles please check whether they are a 1st quality product. The Tile Council have told me that the packaging should have: a manufacturer's name or trade mark, a work size, the country of origin, whether they are glazed or unglazed, rectified or whether they are modular or non modular, the mark of 1st quality, or the type of tile and reference to the conforming Standard. Our packaging has none of the above and we have optical hazing - we're just debating whether it's worth spending $450 to have the Tile Council have a look at the tiles and write a report which we could take to the builder/supplier. As we've hit so many brick walls with the builder we are not confident of getting anywhere. As we've hit so many brick walls with the builder we are not confident of getting anywhere. I've recently had a few tile shops warn me that optical hazing is not uncommon with polished porcelain tiles (apparently occurs about 10%-20% of the time) and is not something that can be predicted, and can occur equally in cheap and expensive tiles. With one store, if you order polished porcelain tiles, you have to sign the order form to say that you have been warned about the possibility of optical hazing with polished porcelain. Apparently it's not a problem with glazed porcelain. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... But if optical hazing is still a problem even with the exxy stuff, maybe it's not worth the hassle? Find out what the Tile Council says about the occurrence of optical hazing in porcelain tiles. BTW, are yours glazed or polished? My understanding is that the optical hazing thing is a problem for polished porcelain, not glazed. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). Re: Anyone else have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles??? 15Mar 23, 2012 7:15 am there is no need to spend 450 to get tile council, if they prove it is optical hazing then you pretty much put a dead end to the issue, because optical hazing is not regulated by industry. Re: Anyone else have 600x600 Polished Porcelain Tiles??? 16Mar 23, 2012 7:58 am Good point. This is an email I received from a member of the Tile Council:- Is this surface "haze" on every individual tile? I don't expect you to actually view every tile but by viewing the floor from all sorts of directions and light sources can you see surface differences in all sighted tiles? If you have any unused tiles from an unopened carton, take one out and place it on top of a fixed tile where you are seeing the concern. Do you see the same surface marking on the unused tile? I will email you copies of 2 papers that I wrote over the past 2 years and in fact they were published in the Australian magazine called Tile Today. I have also talked about the subject with many others at Australian Tile Council gatherings and other industry meetings. Absolutely no one from the industry has queried my understanding of the concern. These papers will fill you in with the various reasons for my thinking. By the way, for interest, not a single wholesaler or retailer (large or small) has ever allowed any of my involvement with "optical haze" cases to a hearing or court - they will come to some agreement without taking it further, usually following the use of my name and information. Basically the problem is a manufacturing defect where defect tiles have been culled out of the general production steam and packed together into cartons and pallets and sold off at a lower cost than 1st quality products. This is virtually the only way that cartons (and pallets) have every tile that has the same or very similar concern. That's also why the carton marking does not comply with the requirements for 1st quality whereas the production stream will go through selection and be packed into cartons adequately marked with all requirements. I'd just like to bring the problem to people's attention so that they can query it with their builder before they hand over their final cheque and accept tiles that are not first quality .....
