Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 31, 2011 9:37 pm Hi folks I'm just wondering if anyone has their laundry running off their kitchen - and I mean that it is only accessible via walking through the kitchen?? I am doing some thinking and planning for extensions in the future but the only place I seem to be able to find for the laundry is right at the end of the kitchen - or behind the kitchen (like a WIP type of arrangement) but unless I want to access it from the living room (no thanks) then I need to access it from the kitchen. I'm still thinking and playing with layouts so hopefully I'll find a suitable solution, but just thought I'd ask if anyone has their laundry set up in a similar situation and if it is a pain in the butt with everyone trapsing through the kitchen to get to the laundry?? (Of course I could solve that by not allowing anyone to go to the laundry when I am in the kitchen, or putting laundry baskets in bathrooms/bedrooms etc, but I don't want to make it 'my domain' and limit kids from getting out of washing/drying/folding duties either . Why should I have all the fun?? ). The other option is a european style laundry but I'd really like a separate laundry room if I can manage it. The door will be closed most of the time but it is kind of out of the way, meaning guests dont have to walk through it or look through it while were entertaining. I think its a good position but I notice most homes these days have laundries tucked away off bedroom hallways which is also an ideal position. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 4Aug 31, 2011 10:37 pm Mine is off the kitchen as well... well... sort of. My plan is on the first page of my thread. The kitchen and laundry are my main working rooms (sadly!!). So it made no sense to put the laundry anywhere else for me. The last cupboard in the kitchen is two doors that open open to show a washing machine with dryer above and a tub. A laundry in a cupboard. I like if for the space saving and it's great t have the laundry at the heart of the house. My wife and I are both chef's so we spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and to just poke your head through the door behind you to throw on another load of washing is a breeze. We love it ! Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 7Sep 01, 2011 3:32 pm Our Laundry is off our Kitchen as well. I would'nt have it anywhere else now. Especially great with our little ones as I can still wash at all times of the day and night and not interrupt their sleep (and I do alot of washing). Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 8Sep 01, 2011 5:03 pm on side note, there is a member on her called Popsicals. I think her thread had the laundry only accessible through the kitchen. It looks really awesome. We have also made the laundry doors to match the rest of the joinery so it looks entirely concealed. We did make the laundry doors inward opening as the oven & microwave are next door which create a bit of a hazard if they opened out. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff440/BroomJ/IMG_0037-1.jpg Haven't finished the build yet so don't ask me what I think of the arrangement yet Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 10Sep 02, 2011 12:36 am My parents place has the laundry off the kitchen and then a sliding door to outside from the laundry. It certainly makes the circuit from kitchen to laundry to clothesline easy and it suits their stage of life. However, I wouldn't buy a house with a laundry off the kitchen as I have kitty litter trays and the door has to stay open all the time for the cats and I don't want pooping cat smells near my kitchen. Same when my kids were babies, I wouldn't have wanted nappy buckets near the kitchen. I also wash horse rugs, so no direct exit outside would also be an issue for me, because carrying a dripping horse rug across the house is a recipe for disaster. Have a serious think about the types of things you or potential buyers do in the laundry. Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 11Sep 02, 2011 1:23 pm We have our laundry behind the kitchen, accessible through a cavity slider. We have a large walkway through kitchen into Laundry so have no issues with people walking through the kitchen. I keep my recycle bin in there, and our bins are out the laundry door so it is really easy to take rubbish out from the kitchen (not traipsing through the house). I also like being able to have my laundry completely separate to all other areas of the house so the noise of the machine does not disturb sleeping, quiet time, tv etc. No complaints at all with the arrangement, and would do it again. Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 12Sep 02, 2011 3:58 pm Hmmm.... lots of pros and cons, isn't there. Thanks for all the responses, been interesting to read how others have their kitchen/laundry set up. HHCIB Re: Laundry off kitchen..... 13Sep 04, 2011 8:47 pm As I read this thread I starting thinking about all the homes I have lived in throughout my life and only my current house has the laundry not totally accessible by going through the kitchen and my new home will be only accessible from the kitchen as well. I am sure there are some negatives but I can't think of any, other than some people having concerns about pet smells etc but my dog has never caused me any problems in that regard.
