Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 11, 2011 9:55 am I am considering putting a carpet cutout in the middle of my family room which is part of a larger open plan living area. My inspiration has come from this display home: We would be looking to put polished porcelain tiles around the carpeted area just like the pictures above (pretty much the same colours). This is my design and where the carpet would sit: I am just wondering, do you think this will devalue the property??? Does it look any good??? DH is in love with the idea, but I'm not 100% sure as I haven't seen it done that often. We were going to put a rug in the area anyway but DH thinks the rug could be a tripping hazard for my 2 year old and this idea will solve that problem. I do like that carpet seems cheaper than the 600x600 polished porcelain tiles we're looking at. And I am concerned about 'China haze' which I've read about on this forum. We seem to only be able to afford polished porcelain tiles made in China. With large double sliding doors in the family room, there will be lots of reflection on the tiles so if I'm unlucky to get some with the 'China haze' it'll probably show up there. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 2Aug 11, 2011 10:02 am Nice idea. At the end of the day its your house, do what makes you happy. I very much doubt it will affect re-sale in any significant way. The only negative I can see is that it will kind of dictate the way the room is used and set up to a degree. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 3Aug 11, 2011 10:13 am Yes, that's what I was told by a carpet salesperson. He suggested a rug instead as the carpet dictates where we can put the furniture. I was thinking though, we already have the bulkhead in the family room so we can't move the furniture around too much anyway. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 4Aug 11, 2011 10:17 am A house we were looking to purchase (before we decided to build) had a carpet inlay in the family area and it really looked great. I also agree with your DH regarding a tripping hazard for your 2yr old. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 6Aug 11, 2011 10:28 am I say go for it Theresa, I've seen this in someones house and it look fabulous. I dont think it would devalue the house. I think it's a point of difference and as you stated, you are locked in to how you can furnish the room anyway. My 2c worth. We are having timber floors but if we were doing tiles I would definately do what you are thinking... a friend has tiles with carpet in the middle... looks great. I definately can't see that it will devalue your property. Go for it..... polished tiles look great but its nice to have a bit of carpet under your feet. If you sell your home, in 5 or 10 years time, it wouldn't cost you much to just update that small piece of carpet to whatever the current colour trend is at the time... if your current choice was out of trend... Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 8Aug 11, 2011 4:25 pm Yeah man do that but the only problem with carpet is you have to remain careful because once carpet gets dirty or wine spills on it then same carpet would become a nightmare for you. The tiles can be cleaned easily. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 9Aug 12, 2011 10:24 pm We have done this to our house and I love it cant say that it has made any difference to how we place our furniture. And for us works a treat as we hve a wood fire so gives us that bit of tile around the wood heater. Personally I love it but then again if I didnt I would have put it in would I LOL. Re: Opinions on carpet cutout in tiled open plan living area 11Aug 13, 2011 10:31 pm Hi Theresa we are looking at doing the same, not totally sold yet but i know how mats curl up in the corners and always seem to move. Other thing i would question would be scratching the surface underneath over time, as there always end up being dirt, sandy something under mats. Then you would be moving furniture to get under mat to clean under properley, think i am now talking myself into it too It looks good too.
