First off, anyone have an opinion on rinnai or Bosch for either instant gas or gas solar boost hot water systems? 2nd, is the cost of these systems on a new build where you typically aren't eligible for rebates.. My impression from quotes I have received for a 4 bathroom house, is that it costs approx $2500 more to put in the solar system over the regular continuos flow gas system. It's only my wife and I and one daughter living in the house. I can't imagine saving enough money on my gas bill for this to be any less than a 10 year payback, by which time the system will need repair, or something better will be on the market. Is it worth putting one of these in given the cost, the long payback, and ineligibility for rebates on a new build? my house blog: http://sugarloafdrivebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Hot water 2Aug 12, 2011 8:42 am We had a rinnai instant gas in our last build - absolutely loved it. I have read mixed reports on this forum but we did not have any problems, especially loved the bath fill option. We found it to be very efficient and I can't remember ever having a gas bill that I considered to be high!!! I'm not sure about cost but I do know we will be doing the same in our next build. We will not be going solar. Agree with what you say about the time it would take to get moneys worth, etc. So many decisions to be made during building.... this is definately not a decision that I will be spending any time on..decision made!!!.. good luck... I'm off now to have a better look at your blog... you have a sloping site away from the street... we are about to do our third build.. all 3 have been similar to yours... hope you have a floor plan posted somewhere!! Re: Hot water 3Aug 12, 2011 4:09 pm If you can't afford it then don't. Otherwise take it. I have one too. Re: Hot water 4Aug 12, 2011 4:24 pm There is a floor plan on the blog on the right hand side of the page. I am very much enjoying the build. Was surprised about the solar though - was expecting a better payoff on the water system. It's not so much that I can't afford it, but rather that if the payoff is so long, and with equipment eventually failing, I would rather put an extra 2.5k into other parts of the house, than into a water system that might or might not pay for itself. The tank warranties are only 10 years if I recall correctly. Saw the builder laying down the trusses on the third floor today...will have to snap some photos for the blog when I get out there next. my house blog: http://sugarloafdrivebuild.blogspot.com/ the sun master is the solar heating to "warm" the water in the tank the S26 is your hot water system which will heat the water (25 degrees?) so with both turned on you… 2 14059 I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black.
