The guys who installed them didn't cut a hole so you can reach through and pull the bolt to unlock the gate from the front. Is this normal? I was hoping for something like this, which is does look similar but doesn't have the hole to open on the other side. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've tried calling the installers but they are not answering their phone! What are your thoughts? Could I cut a hole in the merbau myself? Thats a great look gate (even if I do say so myself!!) When I make this I simply put a piece of merbau on a 45 degree angle, marked it, cut it and screwed in in place. This has been working a treat ever since. It was by no means hard and i replicated it at the front also... The reason I liked this idea was for the front gate I was able to incorporate a padlock to stop people coming in, where most other systems did not allow this.
