Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 02, 2011 10:24 am Hi, I am trying to locate the position of the underground service cables for our current home, as we in the process of subdivding our block to make two smaller blocks and obviuosly need this information. I have contacted the 1100 Dial before you dig service, but the information from them is not detailed enough. I have also contacted the builder of the house, it was built about 13 years ago and he has no records from that long ago, and no memory of who the contractors were who installed the cabling to the house. I was really quite shocked to find out that nobody is required to keep a record, as this is such an important piece of information! My next step is probably going to be to contact a cable locater- has anyone had any experience of doing this? I would really appreciate any advice on locating cables, finding records, using Professional cable locators etc. I live in country NSW. Re: Locating service cables 2Aug 02, 2011 11:42 am It sounds like you need a professional cable location company. Even using dial before you dig there records only show approximate positions so you still have to prove the accuracy by careful digging before you can be certain. If the position is vital and you want quick results you should look at companies who provide hydraulic excavation....more costly but quick and will avoid damaging cables and pipes. Don't know anyone outside Melbourne Metro but might be worth phoning Telstra or your local power company maintenance and asking who they use The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Locating service cables 3Aug 02, 2011 12:11 pm Thanks for that, Telstra has actually discovered they have no record of our property even havinga phone line! So they are sending someone out to have a look at no cost to us. Cable olcators will be the next step I will be looking into, as we need to know where to position our driveway when subdividing. Re: Locating service cables 4Aug 05, 2011 9:28 pm I had to do a similar thing in Sydney, found a company called SureSearch when googling. They were helpful and efficient. From memory cost about $500 to locate phone, water and power. This was on a battle axe block, already so at least 40 meters down each side of driveway (even discovered the power was actually under the neighbors driveway).
