Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 22, 2011 6:04 pm Hi Guys, we have combined indoor living area of 19.64(including bedrooms) in our new house we are about to construct. We will be having gas ducted heating and evaporative cooling. Do you think is it worthwhile to have the heating zoned for single-storey house of our size(25 squares including garage and alfresco). Our builder has been advising us to not have our heating zoned because it is a single storey house, But with just 2 occupants at this stage, we thought zoning might be worth it. fell free to drop your 2 cents.. regards ashrey ashrey|^| Re: minimum area for zoned heating 2Jul 22, 2011 6:11 pm I am going through this at the moment,I have about 22qsm living.I think it is worth it,I'm thinking 3 maybe 4 zones.I got a quote to day Braemar 28 kw 4.7 star spectrolink 12 ducts 3 zones installed $4560,that's a starting point for me Re: minimum area for zoned heating 3Jul 22, 2011 7:57 pm Hi Ashrey, the unit will be sized according to the living area of the house, and generally the heater senses temps at the thermostat control. If u zone off ur house partically for the bedrooms, the rooms will get too hot before it senses the temperature. Def not in your favour to sense off heating especially on builders standard units. Worst case scenario if there are rooms in the house your not using, you can close off damper blades on the actual outlets. This is coming from my partner who installs and maintains these units for a living Hope this helps Re: minimum area for zoned heating 4Jul 22, 2011 8:05 pm I was told that each zone would have their own controls That each zone can have different temps or they can be turned off Re: minimum area for zoned heating 5Jul 22, 2011 9:02 pm Pattycake 4 it sounds like they were referring to an actron system. For sure its beneficial. The digital scroll technology can ramp down to 10% of he total power and do one room at a time if its set up correctly. Do a search on here for them. Im getting one installed in my new house we are building.. Re: minimum area for zoned heating 6Jul 22, 2011 9:09 pm Hi Steve,it was a braemar 28kw 3or 4 zones 4.7 stars 4560 installed 12 ducts.I am having evap cooling Re: minimum area for zoned heating 7Jul 25, 2011 10:04 am I was advised by the HVAC company we eventually chose that unless you have 30+sq of living zoning is not all the effective. A few points to consider are: -A separate Thermostat and return air duct for each zone are required to be anywhere close to effective and efficient. -Zoning will change the size of the unit you need to install but by having a smaller unit you won;t be able to run all zones at once. On the other size you can't run just one or two zones with a larger unit as you need to have a minimum amount of air pass though the unit to disperse the heat or cold created or t will either burn out prematurely (heater too big but not enough air passing) or ice up continually (cooling unit too big and not enough air passing over it) - Added cost of extra parts like damper motors and ducting adapters. This also means more parts to fail. Most of these parts do not have long warranties and only the main units carry 5+ years cover. There will be minimal cost savings as usually because of the too big too small problems of unit size, the will either work over time and run for too long or work very little but still pump lots of energy in short bursts to get to temp. Other countries around the world only zone in 2 stories by using heat downstairs and cooling upstairs and let air filter though the house. As I said, these were points that were raised by my chosen contractor. I went in and told them what I wanted and they asked why. I couldn't give an answer other than "someone said zoning is the way to go" and they gave a good list of reasons and thing to think about. They could have done the zoning and charged me more too. Re: minimum area for zoned heating 8Jul 25, 2011 11:54 am Thanks chrisandkate,I will speak to a few more [experts]like you we can only be advised. What unit did you get,I have found little different in price to have zoned. I do know that I will need a bigger unit 28kw is what I am looking at present Re: minimum area for zoned heating 9Jul 25, 2011 1:26 pm We have 3br 23sq and have specified gas ducted heating. We only have one thermostat (living area) but have a zone damper so we can close off Beds 2 and 3 and the main bathroom as they will only be used when we have guests. The kitchen, living, master bed and ensuite are all on the same zone. As we have specified a 5-star rating ducted heating unit, it is able to vary its output over a wider range to compensate for 3 of the 8 vents being closed off. 4 star or lower units are not able to vary output over as wide a range. I think we got a G61 heater. They are a bit more expensive but very well made and strong units. I got a good deal as a mate of mine deals with tier distributor a lot.
