Do not let the abilities of the operator or the limitations of the draughting "tool" control or limit the potential of the proposed house or design. Use these "tools" for fun or ideas but dont be constrained by them. Here ends the lecture. Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 9Jul 21, 2011 11:56 pm I found sketch up difficult to use and was instead able to quickly model my house using "House Design 3D" on the iPhone: http://chattertonsbuildanewhome.blogspot.com/2011/06/who-needs-display-home.html?m=1. If will not model the roof and you can't apply your own textures, but what you see on my blog took me about 2 hours. Chatz Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 10Jul 22, 2011 11:14 am Wow, well done to everyone who has learned to use sketchup for home modelling! Hats off to you all. I found it too hard to use for the limited time I had. Interesting iPhone app chatz, didnt think to look there. That said, I wanted a free app, which let me draw walls to the nearest mm, I ended up using sweethome3d. Does the iPhone app let you draw to the nearest mm, or does it "help" you and keep changing the lengths like my virtual home does? Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 11Jul 22, 2011 11:34 am I didn't really design the layout of the house with the program but I have slowly translated my final plans into a model and found 3d models online of all my existing furniture and tapware/sinks (well models that are almost identical) once I played with their dimensions and changed the colours. So I'm using it for doing all of my interior design, final layout of seating and acoustic panels in my home theatre and playing around with the layout of my backyard. Not sure if I will get to putting a roof on the model as all the different angles and roof line stuff is a bit more complicated and I prefer to play with it like a dollhouse LOL. Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 12Jul 22, 2011 1:46 pm Another use for SketchUp has been visualising the shadow cast by our neighbours proposed McMansion. I've only got the floorplan done for our house (it's millimetre perfect and will have all interiors) but I whipped up a simplified model of the neighbours house and positioned it next to our block to give me a rough idea. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Tip for anyone trying to get shadows to work: you need to go to File/Geo-location/Add More Imagery... and plug in your actual address, then you can crop out a section of the land from Google Maps and place your house to fit the block (not super accurate, but good enough). Then you can set your UTC time zone in the Shadow Settings box, plug in a time & date (12:00pm June 20th for worst case scenario) and it will cast accurate shadows. Unfortunately in the free version of SketchUp you can't change the orientation of North so if your block is set on an angle like mine, you have to rotate the model to suit. This makes it harder to work on as the origin snaps get confused. The best solution I've found is to keep your house in one file, then File/Import it into a second file and rotate it to fit the block for shadow modelling. You can then Right Click/Reload the model whenever you update the original (I don't think it does it automatically). Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 13Jul 22, 2011 9:12 pm Here is my old house i created in Sketch-up. It is loaded onto Google Earth for the world to see. http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i447/david242gt/myoldhouse.jpg And here is the finished product. http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i447/david242gt/house-3.jpg Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 14Jul 22, 2011 11:50 pm WOW! Did you find it a bit of an anti-climax knowing how it was going to look? Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 15Jul 23, 2011 9:38 am Alt0160, Home design 3D is only centimetre accurate, not millimetre, but that was good enough for me. Those sketchup designs are impressive, how long did they take to put together? Chatz Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 16Jul 23, 2011 7:54 pm I was completely obsessed with Google Sketch up !! It was great to be able to visualise where my things would go and allowed me to see where i would need extra furniture etc. Made it so easy for me when we moved in, as I already knew where everything was going and had bought the extras I needed to fill in the gaps. When I saw this thread, I actually just went back to my sketch up pics for a look - it looks just like the real thing!! Quite surreal to see my house and belongings on the computer now! Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 17Jul 23, 2011 9:08 pm come on.. you know you want to post pictures *hint hint* Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 18Jul 24, 2011 8:45 am chatz <cut> Those sketchup designs are impressive, how long did they take to put together? Chatz It certainly takes time I'm IT savvy but I'm not very good with drawing, I don't even know how to use photoshop. I spent a few hours watching tutorials for using sketchup and then it took quite a few hours to get the plan drawn in 2D will millimeter accuracy, however a lot of that was learning sketchup. Going 3D and adding windows/doors was quite challenging, and getting the floor right was tricky. I'd recommend *not* deleting extra lines on your walls until you understand what they do. I did this a few times only to find that I just removed the outside wall when I look around the other side of the model. Google 3D warehouse has been amazing, you can grab models of fridges, doors, chairs, et cetera and just paste them into your model. http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/ I also modeled in sweethome 3D, that was useful to create a plan of the house, but no flexibility to add a roof et cetera. Sketchup is extremely flexible but you have to do a lost of the work yourself. Re: Anyone else modelling these house in google sketchup? 19Jul 29, 2011 9:11 am I've been inspired. Guess what I'm doing tonight! Have thought about it in the past, but couldn't be bothered. Especially with that deleting lines problem that seems to remove whole portions of the design! I agree, not being able to add a roof in sweethome is annoying, and sunken areas. What else did you find missing? I imported a lot of models from googles 3D warehouse too, fridges, doors, cabinets, windows, cornice, etc. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
