Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 18, 2011 11:16 am We love our area and block of land, but the house is not so good. It's 10 years old. 4 bedrooms (one is very small - 2.5 by 3.4) one living area, one bath/toilet combined and a powder room. No garage. 2 kids, no more in the future The bathroom/toilet opens off the main bedroom and the hallway, and also has an external door. The shower is over the bath and I feel it is dangerous for my husband to get in and out of on one leg (he is an amputee). I'd like to put in a seperate shower that is large enough to put a chair into, but with all the doors opening off the bathroom a lot of the space isn't useable. I could get rid of the bath altogether but the kids and I quite like having a tub. I'm considering turning the small bedroom into a kid's bathroom, and having the current bathroom as an ensuite. Removing and plastering over the door from the hall into the bathroom would allow it to be laid out better and it would be quite a spacious ensuite and the new bathroom would be reasonably sized with a bath, vanity and shower. It would also allow us to change where the door and built in wardrobe is in my daughters room so she can use her space better. The downside to all this is that we will no longer have a spare room. And only have one living area as it is, and no study. I'm not sure how liveable that will be as the kids get older, but then again, how liveable will one bathroom be? What do you think? It it madness? That room is currently holding a book shelf, a broken t.v, a futon with no matress and a built in robe with all our photo albums and the like stored in it, so it's hardley being used to it's full potential as it is. Re: Turning 4th bedroom into a bathroom 2Jul 18, 2011 2:14 pm Hi Mary, How often would you have a guest stay in the spare room? If not that frequent, it's not much of a downside. My opinion is that when my parents built our house, my sisters and I LOVED having our own bathroom all to ourselves. Even though we had another room as a study, we barely ended up using it and i was in VCE after our house was built. My room was big enough to have my own desk in it though but we used a laptop in the lounge infront of the tv anyway hehe Personalised ensuite would be much less strain on your hubby and the kids will thank you when they grow up. And should you have guest over, the kids can always bunk in the same room for a couple of nights and use their room for the guest Re: Turning 4th bedroom into a bathroom 3Jul 18, 2011 2:42 pm + 1 to the above answer. Your husband will be so grateful, as will your kids...and you will love having the extra space, cos right now that study isnt extra space as no one uses it Re: Turning 4th bedroom into a bathroom 5Jul 28, 2011 3:18 pm Sounds like you may need to consider an extension also. I would think that if you can use the 4th BR as a study/spare room then it would be more beneficial to retain it though. You also need to consider where water/sewerage are going to come from and go. Is it on a slab or stumps? Sorry if this doesn't really help much, but I don't see turning this particular room into a bathroom as solving an issue, just potentially creating another one. the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 8158 I use Tramex moisture meter and it will tell me instantly if the wall is cement sheet or plaster or masonite but most people dont have the equipment. 5 4582 8 3960 |
