We are upgrading as the standard builders range only had 200 x 200 tiles. Re: Standard builders range 2Jul 09, 2011 3:12 pm We went with the standard range which we'll be happy enough with for now - you're always paying full price + markup for any upgades in your contract so if you're after something genuinely nice you're probably better off getting it done after handover, especially if you can take advantage of sale prices from carpet/tile/flooring retailers. Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Standard builders range 3Jul 09, 2011 10:19 pm We significantly upgraded our floor tiles in the wet areas ($125 / m2). We used the same tile for the walls of the shower and the bathroom / ensuite splashbacks. We did use a standard tile for the Laundry splashback, but added a feature mosaic strip to it. The rest of our flooring is being done after handover. We've chosen a very dark bamboo floor for the majority of the house, with carpet to the bedrooms and home theatre. We selected a high grade underlay throughout as well. A hangover for doing our own floor is getting the skirting boards done ourselves after handover as well, as we don't want the beading that comes with doing wooden floors when the skirting is already on. Re: Standard builders range 4Jul 10, 2011 3:31 pm My answer was no - but if we had 200x200 tiles to choose from I certainly would have upgraded too! THe timber laminates that we wanted through out the living areas were in the standard range - and the standard flooring was 400x400 tiles - which was big enough just for our wet areas! We are going through a custom home builder who allow a certain $ amount per square metre for tiling, but we won't find anything decent for that allowance. So we will definitely be paying the difference to upgrade our tiles. Re: Standard builders range 8Jul 14, 2011 5:18 pm I voted no. The floor tiles we have were from the builders' range, but we did get a lot more of the house tiled than was included in the base (we have tiles through the whole house apart from the bedrooms and front lounge). We had so much trouble picking tiles - we must have deliberated in the store for at least 4 hours. I wasn't prepared to pay the extra for porcelain (the builder would only contribute $25/m2) and nothing in the range seemed to be the right colour/size/pattern/style. We kept coming back to the same tile so in the end we settled on it - it is a 400x400 ceramic tile that has a stone/travertine look to it and was $55/m2 but because it had the builders' sticker on it we didn't have to pay any extra than their quoted tiling figure. We did pay extra for the laying because they were bigger than the 300x300 standard and we also paid extra for a stone mosaic strip in the bathroom and ensuite, but the wall tiles we chose were also part of the standard range. We get heaps of comments with people who love our tiles and they are shocked when we tell them they aren't real stone. Ended up being a great choice.
