It would certainly save us a whole heap of rental money if we could simply dump a big old caravan at the bottom of our garden and stay there whilst the builders get on with it. I very much doubt I could convince Emma that we could cope in a caravan for 7 months so it's academic really, just curious if you would actually be allowed. I don't see why not is you had a private piece of land somewhere, but not sure if you'd get away with it on say The Chase estate or similar? Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 2Jan 14, 2008 1:32 pm A great question and I can't wait to hear the answer.
We'll most likely be the first house under constructions at our estate - we may even resort to camping on our block! I think it may be a council issue... LOL, i doubt you'd get away with that in The Chase Tony, sorry...... Funny though.... Try renting in neighboring suburbs such as Narre Warren Sth or Cranbourne/Cranbourne Nth.... It will be much cheaper than Berwick... Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 4Jan 14, 2008 2:18 pm I know that a block my parent's have has a clause in the contract that they cannot errect temporary dwellings onsite - eg. tent, caravan, etc.
Our contract has no such clause, so maybe it is dependent on the estate... but I don't see it being particularly practical - electricity, ok, but what about water - drains, toilet, etc, and the fact that the whole block is a building site would mean I doubt the builder would do it (insurance and such). You'd be better off in the local caravan park. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 5Jan 14, 2008 4:17 pm Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be allowed on most estates. It was never a consideration, just curiosity more than anything - as I said, it's quite the done thing in the UK to do that.
We'll more than likely move to Narre Warren when our current lease expires. We are in Balwyn at the moment and paying a fortune in rent. It wouldn't have been our first choice, but was the first decent place that accepted our application and I was under pressure form work to come and start, so we were a bit rushed and just signed up. We'll stay here until our lease finished in October, then move out to NW or similar for the 7 months or so that will be left on the build by then. Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 6Jan 14, 2008 4:56 pm My father-in-law lived in a caravan while his home was being built 11 years ago.
But then again, it wasn't in an estate, and he owned all the land in the neighbourhood - he was developing it himself, selling it off to pretentious estate-wannabes, and was happy to slum it in a caravan for over a year. It was really hard to get him to actually move into the house, so my dh says! Fiona Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 7Jan 14, 2008 8:21 pm Our council doesn't allow it. Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 9Jan 16, 2008 6:33 am I don't hink I would ever do it, I was just curious is all. Having said that though, it would save us a bundle. Re: Can you live in a caravan on your block during the build? 10Jan 16, 2008 6:48 pm I discovered one the other day!
