Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Open plan - Kitchen/laundry/living? 21May 25, 2011 7:51 pm I dont understand the objections to laundry in kitchen based on the fact that used washing machine water is grey water - yes, and so is kitchen sink water and dishwasher water. Anyway, washing machine water drains throught the washing machine out to wherever, doesnt re-enter kitchen, cant see problem there. Also Salmonella is a food bacteria, it would be in your kitchen if you dont handle/store/cook food safely - nothing to do with laundry items. Although E Coli could be in laundry if one has faeces in nappies or underwear - presumably if one has a European laundry one rinses soiled underwear etc outside first and/or uses disposable nappies. (if one has these dilemmas at all) Soaking of clothing to remove stains etc would be easily enough done without a trough by soaking in machine without turning it on. The sound issues are relevant and so I think the laundry in a cupboard would be better than under the kitchen bench (although that is the normal scenario in UK). Re: Open plan - Kitchen/laundry/living? 22May 26, 2011 12:53 pm Yep, germs would be present, however, as previously mentioned with use of common sense, I think you could minimise chance of any contamination. I have gone with the cupboard - reasons (in no particular order): 1. Visual - concealed 2. Noise - cupboard will be easier to soundproof 3. Rental - you would have to buy a front loader to move in this option accommodates both 4. Practicality - regain close to hand under bench cupboard space/ access to cupboard easier. 5. Health - further from food prep area 6. Easier to vent to atmosphere. Re: Open plan - Kitchen/laundry/living? 23May 26, 2011 1:09 pm You make a good point about potential renters possibly having top-loading machines. A tall cupboard would definitely accommodate either type of washer. A friend of mine has a laundry in a cupboard, similar to the third photo. The dryer is vented to outside (the cupboard is against an external wall, so this was pretty easy). I'd make sure this was possible, to avoid ending up with mould issues down the track. Hello!
