Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 21, 2011 2:14 pm I've looked at a few tilers' jobs recently and wasn't impressed with any of them. The mitred joints around windows and corners in general was very poor. But maybe I am expecting the impossible. What are some of the things to look at when choosing a Tiler? Are you entirely happy with the job your tiler did? Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 5May 21, 2011 10:08 pm My tiling job is very poor anywhere that there is joins/corners/window frames etc. Varrying grout thickness, poorly cut tiles and just sub standard workmanship. I don't know if I expect too much and if that is the norm, but it certainly doesn't look too stream line. When we first moved in we noticed there was grout all over the window frames, have since had them back to remove all that. I suppose word of mouth and once you find a job you are happy with, get the name of the tiler. Although the job in our house isn't too good, I can imagine it would be a hard job to get 100% correct. Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 6May 21, 2011 10:09 pm Suh, They are the ones I went to check out. However I realised that not everyone's expectations are the same Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 7May 21, 2011 10:31 pm blueblueblue Lex I went to see their work in person. I never thought that would be 'doable' My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... How to tell if the Tiler is good? 9May 22, 2011 9:03 am I suggest when you decide where you are getting your tiles from ask the guy at the showroom who they recommend. They would get feedback from customers about workmanship and therefore continue to recommend the good tilers and not recommend the bad tilers. This is what we did. Simple when you think about it Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 10May 22, 2011 9:08 am I wish I did this, the tiler my builder uses is useless. My tiler who did my floors said his tile cutter looked like something you buy from the toy shop (comparing sizes LOL) Half of the cut tiles look grinded How to tell if the Tiler is good? 11May 22, 2011 9:20 am That would be so disappointing Mrs P our tiler was brilliant and when we needed some extra tiling done that he couldn't do he put us on to the guy who trained him to finish up, so he was brilliant x 2 sorry you didn't get a brilliant one. Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 13May 22, 2011 9:25 am suh That would be so disappointing Mrs P our tiler was brilliant and when we needed some extra tiling done that he couldn't do he put us on to the guy who trained him to finish up, so he was brilliant x 2 sorry you didn't get a brilliant one. I wish I got my tiler to do them, he did my floors and there is not one flaw in my floors and they are polished porcelain, he tiled the house we are currently in and the job is immaculate. Oh well! Glad one of us got an awesome job haha Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 14May 22, 2011 9:44 am Thanks for that suh. We are currently at plastering stage but are planning ahead Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 15May 22, 2011 10:16 am Suh, was your tiler a local or from Sydney? I would ask Mrs P for her tiler too, but for all I know I might get someone from Adelaide! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 18May 24, 2011 6:47 pm The tiler has just finished our home and he did an amazing job and was fascinating to watch. I asked him the very same question( how do you pick a good tiler) The first thing is if they use the little plastic x shape things to space the tiles then your in trouble. A good tiler will have the whole house marked out and all the edge tiles that have to be cut done first (easy to do now with a laser to help for the marking). The whole house should be marked out first to make sure the inside grout lines line up with outside through glass doors and also down hallways and into other wet areas. The actual laying is done by eyeing the grout spacing and constantly adjusting grout spacing to compensate for differences in tile dimensions.(There are variances in all tile dimensions, only minor but if you use the spacers then your grout lines will not match after a couple of runs.) My tiler also used the latest leveling system using which made a big difference, no more kicker corners standing out of the tiles. It did mean the job took longer but when building a house a week longer is nothing when you get good results. Using the leveling system the open plan area now is as flat as lino with smaller and equal grout lines througout the house. We have have four sliding glass doors and all the grout lines match through the glass. He was such a perfectionist that 2 days after laying he showed me tiles he was going to smash out and do again because the corners sat up a bit or were too low. I couldn't see what he was talking about but he wanted it to be perfect which didn't bother me cause any extra expense went back to the builder. Because our house is about a third tiles we are more than happy with the job that has been done. I asked him the very same question( how do you pick a good tiler) The first thing is if they use the little plastic x shape things to space the tiles then your in trouble. Unfortunately by the time most people see how the tiler operates they have already contracted him. Unless you 'stalk' building sites to see how they work, you are behind the 8 ball. Re: How to tell if the Tiler is good? 20May 24, 2011 10:25 pm And no interview will help weed out the "bad" tilers. They can change their mind without letting you know and you simply can't be watching them all the time (or any time, for that matter). So Kingo, send me the tiler's details, yes? Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design. Also are you… 6 7028 9 24751 Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7256 |
