Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 05, 2011 3:16 pm Our bricks that we had chosen were rejected through DA (colour too light) and we've had to select another brick. my first choice is an upgrade (quote has now come back for $1910) and my second choice is in our range so no cost. The question is, is it worth the exta $1.9K? Oh the colours are: PGH Mild Steel and PGH Cement - Mild steel is darker so might be the safer but mroe costly option Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 2May 05, 2011 3:20 pm Bricks occupies more than 70-80% of the exterior of the house. Therefore personally, I think 1.9k out of approximately 200k is not that much especially if your house looks how you want. It is purely for aesthetics though because I do not think it is a special compound that has added strength or insulation from one to the other. Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 3May 05, 2011 3:23 pm Yeah it's purely for aesthetics, I guess that's why I'm (or more so my husband) is struggling with paying extra Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 4May 05, 2011 3:37 pm Depends on how important it is to you. Some people think that they spend more time inside the home so don't think it is worth upgrading the exterior. Other people want to see bricks they love every time they pull in the driveway. There's no right or wrong. We upgraded ours for around 3k, but we had limited colour palette due to estate covenants and our other choices were orange... or orange. But... in my years on this forum there's been a couple of posters that have regretted not upgrading, but I can't remeber anyone who has regretted that they did. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 5May 05, 2011 4:16 pm Agree... it's worth the $1900 to upgrade.... we fell in love with a brick that turned out to be the most expensive of the lot and would have been about 10K extra We traded off and decided the 10K would go towards the home theatre. We were fortunate that we were looking for a dark brick and the Homestead Tan has come up trumps. Our choice was only one category up from the standard so didn't add much extra. The whole process is one of checks and balances, trade-offs and compromises. Far too many choices to make... sometimes I think if we just had a choice of Option A and Option B life would be far easier!! haha Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 6May 05, 2011 5:23 pm I upgraded my bricks for $7K and do not regret the decision at all. I absolutely love my bricks and would have regretted NOT having them. I'm one of those who loves swooning over my bricks every time I pull into the driveway! They were an integral part in forming the whole look and feel I have for my finished home. I was actually lucky that my Project Builder offered these bricks, at the time, none of the other Builders I was looking at did. For me it also came down to the fact that they cannot be changed (other than rendering over them), unlike paint colours, benches and cabinets which can at some stage in the future. I would have paid more if we had to, as we really wanted the bricks. If you really love the upgrade brick, it will be worth it. Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 8May 05, 2011 7:25 pm Thanks for the advice guys. I've convinced (reluctanly) hubby to agree to mild steel - the upgrade. The condition is though that I have to take it out of the furniture budget Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 9May 05, 2011 7:46 pm snoofie Agree... it's worth the $1900 to upgrade.... we fell in love with a brick that turned out to be the most expensive of the lot and would have been about 10K extra We traded off and decided the 10K would go towards the home theatre. Very similar situation to us. We loved the Newport brick which turned out to be an upgrade (cost approx $6k), we were lucky enough to find another brick which was also an upgrade and was *similar* to Newport, as it turns out we love our brick Homestead mushroom, and got to keep most of the $6k LOL We didn't like any of the Cat 1 bricks at all My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 10May 05, 2011 8:32 pm We were the same, none of the Cat 1 bricks appealed... but funny enough we picked most of our tiles from standard range.. except for the feature tiles for the shower niches and the kitchen feature tiles. I can't wait to see it all come together - our tiles were delivered the other day and we have a meeting set up for tomorrow to make sure they are ok and to go through the house. Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 11May 06, 2011 8:49 am If you really don't like any of the standard range bricks then an upgrade should be considered. We didn't really like any of the brick in our builders standard range but they were also swapping to a new supplier at the time so we had heaps to choose from. Incidentally, we ended up choosing one of the originals as when we took the sample outside in to natural light and compared them with some of the other colors for gutters, etc.. we liked they look great (IMO) Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 12May 06, 2011 9:12 am The ones we liked in the standard range were too light hence why we had to choose again. We have decided to go with the upgrade Re: Bricks - is it worth upgrading 13May 13, 2011 8:06 am We upgraded to PGH Mild Steel and we are so happy we did.
