Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 20, 2011 9:26 am Hi all, Just wondering if I could have some advice on which way to build my house on this block? If I have attached the link properly you should be able to see that there is a suggested building envelope marked, and behind it is the "backyard" area of the block (which we are not allowed to build on) which essentially faces SW. We want to have as much of the living space opening to that backyard area as it's where the kids will play, the patio and BBQ will be etc. However obviously having south facing living areas is not ideal. How could I overcome this issue with clever design? Is it enough to have NW and W facing living areas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. http://www.hazelbrookruralestate.com.au/contentfiles/PriceLists/Hazelbrook%20Rural%20Estate%20-%20Individual%20Lot%201.pdf Re: Which way do I build my house? 3Apr 20, 2011 6:33 pm Ahhhh yes. That would be important! The existing road is along side D and the new cul de sac is along side C. The whole plot is basically a paddock, and there are only a few pine trees on the half we can't build in. It's fairly flat (we won't need to build split level) and our new neighbour along side B will also have to build their house on the eastern half of the block, so our houses won't be close. The existing neighbour along side A is hidden by a lovely row of tall trees and we can't see into each others' yards. Hopefully that helps! I want to ensure there are enough windows etc facing the sun to assist the house, but I also want to have the majority of the outdoor living space facing the western half of the block so we can enjoy the space. Thanks! Re: Which way do I build my house? 4Apr 25, 2011 9:16 pm We placed all our living areas on the northern side of our house to take advantage of the natural light. The front of our house has the master bedroom in it and it faces east and gets all the beautiful morning sun. We put all the bedrooms along the southern side of the house to keep them cool. That leaves the West and this is our Alfresco and living area so we can get the afternoon sun over the garden and enjoy the views of the bushland behind us. We chose to build this way as we also believe it will help us be more energy efficient.
