Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 17, 2011 10:19 am Hi just wondering how many people get their carpets cleaned upon moving out of your home when you sell it? I know in rentals it is a must, settlement on our property is next week and I am hoping it is some sort of common courtesy to get it done when you leave. I've asked the real estate selling the house and he said he will find out for us, but I want to know other peoples opinion? Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 2Apr 17, 2011 11:07 am It's not a requirement on selling, unless it's been written into the contract of sale. We had our carpets dry cleaned just prior to putting the house on the market. It sold within 10 days, and we had a ninety day settlement. The carpets stayed clean (I made everyone take their damn shoes off! ) and we didn't feel the need to have the carpets cleaned again prior to moving out. I guess it depends on the good will of your vendors. Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 3Apr 17, 2011 11:18 am Damn, I wish I had of known that when we signed, I would of gotten it added into the contract! I suppose I am just use to having to get carpets cleaned when I move out of places and moving into new places with clean carpets! Fingers crossed that because we have asked they will do it for us! Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 4Apr 17, 2011 1:09 pm Well, if not, just book a carpet cleaner before you move in. At least it's not a big expense. Make sure you check with the current owners what type of carpet it is for future reference. If it's pure wool, don't get it steam cleaned; it'll shrink. Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 6Apr 17, 2011 9:41 pm We have always had the carpet cleaned on selling our house. We will do the same with this one when it sells. I would hate to buy a house where the carpets weren't cleaned. I think it is the only way to leave a house for new people to move straight in. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. So if we have to get them done it will have to be once we are moved in. Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 8Apr 18, 2011 10:12 am Having bought a pre built home 1st time around I'd be surprised if they vacuumed let alone cleaned them. The wife was rather upset at the state of our place when we took possession but I thought it was standard to get the keys and find a filthy house. Lots of dust and cobwebs from behind furniture. Think about how long settlement can take. I wouldn't be doing anymore that I wanted to keep the place "tidy" and when I moved its the new owners problem. If you want the carpets cleaned just organize with the agent to have access to the property early. We had access to the house before the settlement went through at midday so we could transport equipments and supplies to re paint before we moved in. It went like this: Friday 9am - Take paint, rollers, brushes, etc... to house + BBQ, eskies, ice, etc... 10am - shopping for supplies 12pm - settlement 1pm go to house and prepare to paint. lay drop sheets, fix holes & chips etc.., sand, check for other items that are broken (light globes, switches and teh like) 12am wrap up day one. Got all bedroom ceilings + rooms where no filler req. Saturday- paint, paint, paint. Many friends helping Sunday- paint, paint. Many friends helping Monday morning- check that all is ready to move in. 10am-load the truck and move. You really need to leave yourself a few days to move in and get the house ready IMO. We had the keys to our old house for 1 week after moving in so we could go back and clean it. I wouldn't be doing anymore that I wanted to keep the place "tidy" and when I moved its the new owners problem. I would hope that most people have better manners. We went back to the empty house, vacuumed thoroughly, dusted window sills and skirtings, cleaned kitchen and bathroom (including the oven), wiped down inside all cupboards, cleaned off the odd mark from walls (thank goodness for Jif ), swept decking and paving outdoors, mowed lawns and put the bins out. I also dug out all instruction manuals for appliances and left them on the kitchen bench for the new owner, together with garage remote, spare keys (all tagged) and details of bin days, council recycling rules and so on. It's just common courtesy, really. Do unto others and all that.... Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 10Apr 18, 2011 10:57 am kek I would hope that most people have better manners. I agree, however like with all aspects of life, "people" just don' have those kinds of standards/morals/manners anymore. There are a few, but I feel that in general they are not what used to be. kek It's just common courtesy, really. Do unto others and all that.... Again I agree and I try to be kind and polite. Truth be told I struggle and am one of the worst for poor manners. In like all I want is a fair go, but it seems in every aspect there are people who don't want to do what is fair and screw it up for everyone else. Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 11Apr 18, 2011 1:55 pm Well I have had our real estate talk to the current owners and they said they have had the carpets steam cleaned not to long ago, so it shouldn't need to be done again! Also found out that we get to keep one of the wall mounted flat screens TV's which is pretty awesome! I agree though Kek, its all about common courtesy! Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 12Apr 18, 2011 4:41 pm of the two times i have sold a place i haven't steam cleaned the carpet. The buyer is buying the property as it is, unless they specify further work they are getting the property as it stood when the signed the contracts basically. I vacume, mop the floors and wipe the place over which generally speaking isn't a big ask if the place was already in 'sale' mode. I have purchased a few cheap places in regional vic including some ex-dept of housing places and they where filthy. Left all the papers for the house out, tagged keys, along with a little ******** sheet. Also left them a card with a bottle of sparkling. Felt like the right thing to do... Trying to build up some good karma as we start our build (feel like we'll need it). I could never leave a place like that. We are renting while our house is being built, I keep the house spotless, the same way I will keep my own home. Well we moved in over the weekend, the house was absolutely filthy and the carpets will need to be cleaned as it smells like cat pee Feel like I have been cleaning non stop for the last week! I suppose you live and you learn, next time I will know better and leave more time to clean etc! Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 16Apr 27, 2011 9:58 pm When we moved into our house in Roxburgh Park it was in pretty average condition. The kids rooms had crayon marks on the walls, doors and roofs (Were they throwing them?), the carpets were pretty dirty and the walls and everything were just generally dirty. It was by no means a cesspool, but we spent the first few days just cleaning everything. When we moved out, the house was clean enough from spucing it up for sale, but we didn't get it steam cleaned or anything. It was in my intentions list, but we had a 14 day settlement, Ash had just been diagnosed and I was packing the entire house myself. I simply ran out of the time and care to do it. Re: Getting carpets cleaned when moving out 17Nov 21, 2014 7:06 pm When we moved into our current house, the previous owners did the bare minimum. Oven wasn't cleaned, the rest of the kitchen was wiped down. Carpets weren't cleaned, but it didn't really worry us as we just got them cleaned ourselves and that way we know they'd been done how we wnted. I certainly would not expect them to be done. The absolute kicker we discovered though... they'd clearly decided to use the loo just one last time and didn't bother flushing. Can't say we made much effort with any of their mail that turned up seeing as they didn't bother to have it redirected. Karma.
