Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 4Apr 11, 2011 8:15 am Eve Dweller That was my original idea, but It takes too much espace, what I want is to have the bed suspended, under it put the wardrobe(100cm of width), then use the 130cm left plus the corner and the other wall to make a desktop big enough for a computer, laptop and books from college. With the bunk bed I would have to put the wardrobe in front of the desktop, and that could be pretty uncomfortable(the doors would just barely open). nerak Rent, but the owner is ok with it as long as I can assure him that it is safe. EDIT: I wouldnt mind hanging it from the wall(it's more or less the same to me) if it was safer, I assumed the ceiling would be more sturdy but maybe I was wrong... Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 5Apr 11, 2011 8:42 am If you're putting a wardrobe under it then can't you rest it on that and build up some legs for the other side?
Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 6Apr 11, 2011 9:03 am Can you support three of the corners on the floor? And have just the fourth corner (the one in the middle of the room) going from the roof? If you combine that with a piece of strong wood or metal running diagonally between the two ground-supported corners then the vast majority of the weight is going on to the floor. self::bbcode_second_pass_code_cb A is the corner of the room, A B and C are supported on the floor. A beam runs from B to C so the center of the bed is supported by B and C. Then D can hang from the roof, letting you use the space underneath. The whole point being that D won't need to support much, it's just there to stop the bed from tipping if you temporarily put a lot of weight on that corner. Yes, but I like more the 3 legs idea from btherl. btherl: Thanks, didnt thought of that. Still, even if it is just for curiosity(and because it would cost way way less) I would like to know if the "just hang it from the ceiling" or "hang it from the wall" ideas could work. I mean, every hook would need to support about 25Kg while sleeping(no movement) and a little more while climbing to it(if the ladder if attached) or moving. I've seen boxing bags that weight more hanging from ceilings, that's where I got the idea... Thanks. Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 8Apr 11, 2011 10:06 am The issue is not static weight but dynamic (as you alluded to). When you get in and out you create stress not just vertically but horizontally. This will result in faliure if not compensated for at least 3 times the static wieght. You will also have stability issues - pendulem effect. Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 10Apr 11, 2011 10:34 am sirgoat not to mention a floating bed is going to have some interesting implications when its not being used for sleeping. That wont be a problem, this room is in my mother's apartment, just for summer/christmas(about two months per year)... I'll leave the other activities to my own apartment. Ok, but if the ladder where to be fixed to the wall instead of the bed, and the bed fixed to the wall so it cant move horizontally(really simple, 2-3 screws and that's it), could it work? And would just hanging it in the wall be better? smaller hooks, more of them(3-4 in each wall) and some rope/chain to distribute the weight, each one would have to support about 15-20Kg tops(still having the bed fixed to the wall to remove horizontal movement). I'm sorry if I seem close minded here, that's not my intention, I really appreciate all the comments and help. I just want to figure out if and why this can/can not work since it's useful knowledge for future projects, not only because I'm attached to the idea itself. If it is only used for 2 months of the year during summer/Christmas do you really need a permanent desk in there? The problem is that the only place I can put a decent sized desktop, is also the only place where I can put the bed(the other "large" wall having the door and all). And also, if I hang the bed, I can put the wardrobe under it, gaining a lot of space. Having the bed at normal height makes me "waste" 1m of wall for the wardrobe, plus the 2m for the bed, that plus the door the desk would end up being about 80cm long, top, and that is kind of small for what I need. It's actually one of the options than I'm considering right now, cheap, I can still put the wardrobe under the bed and wouldnt take anything from the desk. to_do_list Hammock? Thing is, If the wall/ceiling is strong enough to support a hammock, it will support the bed just fine. When I say that it would need to support 100-120Kg I mean that as a safety margin, since most of the weight will be supported by the wardrobe anyway(but still, knowing that the bed can support 100Kg more than it needs to would make me sleep a LOT better ). I'm still over in my head about putting 8 or so "small" hooks in the wall and distribute the weight with rope, 20Kg(big safety margin even without the wardrobe) per hook doesn't sound like something that would make the wall or the bed go down, and it would be dirty cheap and easy to build. Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 19Apr 11, 2011 10:40 pm There was recently a news snippet on news.com.au about a woman living in Manhattan with the smallest apartment. It contained a photo showing her living space. She basically had a kind of adult bunk bed( top bed only) arrangement. She had planned to live there only for a year to prove it could be done but was now 3 years in. Video footage below of her in the apartment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5zWJ6lgPhw Re: Help hanging a bed from the ceiling 20Apr 12, 2011 6:07 am Buying 4 hooks capable of holding 25KG would not give you a safe 100KG loading limit. Whilst you may be distributing the load it wont always be even. I guess you could say my car tyre is rated at a safe driving speed of 150Kp/h so It should hold up a 600Kph because I have 4 tryes. (poor analogy) Dyna bolting a hook (or eye bolt) capable of holding 100KG+ x 4 is what you'd want to be doing. You say you want to put a wardrobe under it so I assume you'll be pretty high up. I'd personally look at other options. Call me a pessimist but I don't really see you pulling this one off. I get the mental picture of it all coming crashing down on you. All the best though.
