Browse Forums General Discussion Re: what cornice style did you choose? 21Apr 14, 2009 11:29 pm Have just been perving at NY apartmants on http://corcoran.com/newyork/ and noticed that most newly renovated places have NO cornice at all. What does everyone think of this look? I guess it would be cheaper since there is no cornice to buy :S OR does it take a lot longer to get the plasterboards "connected" properly? Re: what cornice style did you choose? 22Apr 15, 2009 12:02 am hey getting there, that's an awesome site! I see you have to spend at least $2 million in new york to get a doorman... wouldn't it be nice! Annie A thankful person is a happy person. You will find that your builder will either (a) not do it or (b) charge a fairly hefty cost to do it. Some boutique builders offer it as a standard but most builders charge for it. Your plasterer would have to be really finicky to get it looking smooth and even. Cornices cover a multitude of sins (which is why builders like them) Some things are worth waiting for. Re: what cornice style did you choose? 26Aug 19, 2011 6:29 pm I was on two minds whether or not to start a new thred, but in the end thought it worthwhile to ressurect this one as it does have some good info and links in it. I was going with the run-of-the-mill 90mm cove cornice, however, when I had a chance to look at my friends recently completed house, I was simply blown away ! ![]() The clean straight simple lines demarcating a division between the wall and ceiling was like a breath of fresh air - no really ! I got my cornice removed and have no specified straight set (aka no cornice) as my choice. My ceilings are 3000mm high (10 feet) and I bet it would look simply superb ![]() Sometimes, the simplist styles are the most elegant. IIt truely lends credence to the adage "less is more". Small house but with 3m ceilings. We are trying to decide between no cornice, 3 step or shadow line. I am leaning towards shadow line but have never seen them anywhere except the csr brochure. If there any photos for shadow line cornices could someone please post them. Re: what cornice style did you choose? 28Aug 19, 2011 7:36 pm We live in an apartment at the moment, therefore we have no cornice. It is divine. Our house unfortunately will have your bog standard normal cornice. *sob* If we could afford it, we would go without, then we can have things going truely from floor to ceiling, e.g. kitchen cabinets, mirrored sliding doors on wardrobes, tiling, windows. what cornice style did you choose? 30Aug 19, 2011 9:43 pm I'd love to see a pic of shadowset as well. My SS was only talking about this style today. --- - Sent from my mobile device ... please excuse the typing missed cakes. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: what cornice style did you choose? 31Aug 22, 2011 10:58 am Yay ! just got back from my builder. He is doing the entire house with a "square set" plaster board for a minimal amount more. aza0: I did think about shadow set cornice - the issue with that (and this is my personal opinion only) is that I feel the ceiling is not connected visually to the wall and that just feels eerie to me (personally). If I could get past that psychological barrier, I would go for shadow set. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. I just painted a bedroom ceiling (2 more to go) with rose cornicing..... a true nightmare. square set for me in our extension!!!!!! lol Re: what cornice style did you choose? 38Jun 11, 2012 8:58 pm Anyone with square set cornices.... is it more prone to cracking than a std cornice? People say it is but I can't see why it would. Most cracks in the cornice are from the builders not using eough plaster to stick the cornice on. Re: what cornice style did you choose? 39Jun 11, 2012 9:34 pm Heres a photo of our shadowline. Our builder won't do sq set as they said it cracks, originally we wanted sq set but they offered us normal cornice or shadowline. The shadow line looks amazing, like the ceiling is floating. But is more than double the cost of sq set Will get better photos next week I asked to speak to people who were currently building and have been going through the worst of it.
