Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 24, 2011 11:56 am I am about to start installing a fence at my new house, and would like to know what everyone thinks is a reasonable charge for labour that I can give to my neighbour? I am not only doing the fence between our properties, but also the fence between my neighbour and the property behind his. I was thinking along the lines of $20/m (obviously he would only pay half the labour costs for our common fence) and about the same again for the cost of laying a concrete plynth under the fence... any suggestions would be most welcome. Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 3Mar 24, 2011 1:21 pm Are you saying you don't need their consent to start building? Normally I thought boundaries you had to sign of an agreement of sorts? There's a company doing most in our estate, first you have to get the names of the land owners then they send them a consent to pay 50/50? Unless they've already said to you mate knock it up? Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 4Mar 24, 2011 1:32 pm how much would you charge for your services if they weren't a neighbour? do you do this for a living? I have no idea how much fence builders would charge normally, so can't really say how much a mate's rate should be! Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 5Mar 24, 2011 3:36 pm I believe the going rate would be cost of materials + a couple of slabs to share. If you want a $ figure, well that depends on the type of fence. For a timber fence with exposed posts and a capping labor is $30 - $40 a meter. Just got a heap of quotes for my own fence. Milesy Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 6Mar 24, 2011 3:47 pm I agree with what was said above. It just doesn't sit right with my charging neighbours for labour costs... Will they give you a hand at all? Defintely costs of materials, plus a few slabs My husband does plumbing jobs for a lot of our neighbours, and he only charges them for materials. They pay him with beer if they feel like it Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 7Mar 25, 2011 1:13 pm Get some quotes from other installers, detail the labour and material cost, and sit down with your neighbor to work it out. I end up start to charge my neighbors (mates rate) after they started to call me over to fix their IT problem at very inconvinent time. Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 8Mar 28, 2011 10:34 am Going rate around my area is $80 a metre for a 2.1m fence. If you do this for a living, obviously you can provide the required warranty and support of the fence, which normally is 10 to 15 years. If you are not doing this for a living, what garentees does the neighbour have to workmanship? Are you prepared to support them for 15 years for $20 a metre? Materials and invites to BBQs would be a better payment. Re: fair price to charge neighbour for labour 10Mar 29, 2011 12:50 am I ended up meeting you half way Casa and went with $30 a metre, but that also included a 150mm high concrete plinth at the bottom of the fence... by the looks of the quotes my neighbour had already gotten, labour was around $65-$70 a metre, so he was more than happy with my price. Oh and he's the one who actually offered to pay me for it - I was just going to put the fence up around my place and just ask my 3 neighbours for half the materials cost, but he said he wouldn't let me do it unless he could actually pay me something for doing it... If you already have a contract, is the inspection cost stated in there? If not they would be forced to issue you a variation which you could of course object to. 12 25847 Hi, we live in an area where the black soil is prone to a lot of movement.
