Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 01, 2011 10:19 am Our house was all good up till about last week... We drove down to have a look on Sunday and voila .. we were in for a rude shock !
I don't know where that pipe has come from and what it is doing on our feature pillar !! Why can't the downpipe have been installed in the hidden way ? Any ideas on what we should do now ?? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ UPDATED QUESTION on 11th MARCH 2011 Hi All, After days of back and forth with the builders (and heaps of exchanged emails), the builder has suggested another solution. Well, basically what they suggest is instead of a downpipe, they will run a nozzle on the side of the feature pillar, which will just spray the water onto the grass. Now I am not sure which one is better of these both !? Keep the downpipe or go with the Nozzle method ? I am not exactly sure what to do, as this is so hard to imagine ! Any comments/ideas is greatly appreciated !! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 2Mar 01, 2011 10:20 am There is someone else on the forum who had this problem, but can't for the life of me remember who. I think the builder ended up changing it because they agreed it looked a bit silly. Is it on your plans? Maybe have a chat to the builder and see if they will move it? The road to success is always under construction House completed April 2011 - slowly making it a home... Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 3Mar 01, 2011 10:25 am It would be on the plans, maybe have it painted the same colour as the pillar, to help it blend in a bit Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 4Mar 01, 2011 10:28 am have a look at your plans straight away and see where it is located. I think if it is correct to your plans you are stuck with it unless you are willing to pay to alter it. If it is not correct to your plans ask them to change it. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 5Mar 01, 2011 10:29 am BTW - what bricks did you use?? - they look great! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 6Mar 01, 2011 10:32 am Hi all, thanks so much for the prompt reply ! I just checked my plans again.. and I can't seem to see anything like a down pipe on the front pillar....Unless I am missing something ? We will raise it with our SS ... but thought I might ask if anyone has had faced something like this before. What a shock ! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 8Mar 01, 2011 11:19 am Thats just ugly. Maybe paint it the same colour. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 9Mar 01, 2011 11:29 am Look at all the elevations of your plan. On none of the plans would you see actual downpipes drawn. But on your elevations you would have a marking of "DP" which is the indicative position of your down pipes. But any way it wouldn't be sensible of the builder to go ahead and do this, it is like spoiling ones own art work. The economical and quick option would be to camouflage the pipe with pillar by painting it with the same colour. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 10Mar 01, 2011 11:49 am We had a similar situation - we talked to our SS who agreed it looked silly, we also had a junction box going on the pillar, so I argued that there would be no room for the junction box and downpipe - they agreed to change it to the side. It should be able to be changed if possible. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 12Mar 01, 2011 2:03 pm Thanks everyone for your replies.... We have PCI tomorrow and we will highlight this to the SS. Since nothing is specified on the plans as to where the downpipes would go..it would really depend on whose argument is stronger. Fingers crossed ! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 13Mar 01, 2011 2:59 pm It's just wrong! Surely it can be moved to the side where it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb! Good luck with getting it fixed. For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 14Mar 01, 2011 8:24 pm I don't know if it is just me, but the downpipe doesn't look plumb. It doesn't look to run parallel with the pier. Maybe it's just the picture. The pitch of the roof makes it difficult for the downpipe to be anywhere other than where it is. Best option would have been plastic down pipe down the inside of the pier exiting at the bottom. Just harder to build it in the first place, but much neater. Running down the side of either of the front piers is probably the only option. Or paint it. Poor design really considering the pier is a feature. Often downpipes are marked as RWP on the plans but can be moved at the roof plumbers discretion. Hope the builders find you a suitable solution. Saying that yours seems to be in a really poor position so hopefully they will change it for you. Good luck. Jason Building a modified Platinum MKII with Blueprint Homes. To my way of thinking, if you paint it to match the render it will be a lot less noticable than on the brick column or tacking it onto the side of the column? With some foresight they could have run it down the cavity of the brick column but that horse has bolted. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 17Mar 02, 2011 11:30 am Painting it is not a bad idea if you don't get another resolution. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 20Mar 10, 2011 10:57 am Could you buy a short piece of pipe and move the down pipe to the back of the pillar? Kind of wrap the pipe around? Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering. Builder is quoting 2500$ laying cost for upto 10msq. The 2 pillars come to be 16msq. So laying costs are 5000$… 0 8620 get them to replace the chipped tiles. It will stick out like a sore thumb overwise. Also tiler will be siliconing the miters rather than grouting.
