Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 27, 2011 2:55 pm When boxing out the alfresco in preparation for the ceiling, is villaboard used most of the time? I have been told that villaboard can't be properly secured to a steel frame. What is ten used for boxing out the alfresco on a steel frame house?
This is what I am referring to: Stormy, I hope you don't mind me cropping your image. Let me know if you do and I will take it off. Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 2Feb 27, 2011 3:16 pm Hi, Our house will be steel frame. The plans specify an aquachek gyprock lining for the alfresco area Paul Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 3Feb 27, 2011 3:22 pm What will you have on the sides Paul? Will they box out te structural steel using aquachek too? Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 4Feb 27, 2011 4:49 pm Your plasterer is probably looking at the easiest solution for himself. Any cement sheet product will need predrilling and counrter sinking to allow the screws to finish below flush for later filling. Using plasterboard they can do this without predrilling. Which would you rather? cement sheet that is waterproof and could get wet but takes more work from the tradie or plasterboard that is water resistant when painted and takes less work to put up. Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 5Feb 27, 2011 4:55 pm Fred, are you referring to "the box" or the material used as the ceiling?

Only villaboard cant, is that right? Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 10Feb 28, 2011 7:07 pm For fixing blueboard to steel it depends on what thickness you are fixing to. From Hardies Hardietex information sheet: For steel framing of thickness 0.55mm to 0.75mm BMT, 20mm Buildex FibreTEKS self drilling screws. For steel framing of thickness 0.80mm to 1.6mm. Use 8g-32mm HardiDrive® grey external grade screws. If it is thicker structural steel then you will need to find the appropriate fixings. Villaboard is an internal lining. Our builder attached timber battens to the ceiling frames over the decks to fix the fibro to. He said that this let him use countersinking(?) screws to fix the fibro and got a neater finish. The picture below shows the timber attached to the frame before the fibro ceiling was put in place. BTW I thought blueboard is meant to be rendered and therefore wouldn't be suitable for the ceiling of an al fresco area? Thanks so much for that chippy!!!! Re: Boxing out the alfresco before plaster goes on/ steel fr 13Mar 01, 2011 10:56 am Hi Bluex3. My alfresco is probably not the best example to use as it's a timber frame, not steel. The 'boxing out' part you refer to are beams of wood which have been painted. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The infil section above the stacker door is cement sheet (same as the eaves), but the ceiling itself is plasterboard. Don't know if that is an 'unfortunate' or not, but after 18 months and some pretty extreme Melbourne weather it hasn't cracked or bowed at all. I honestly have no idea how they would do it on a steel frame, but I hope you find your answer! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! You can see one of our beams at the open end of the deck. It has the weatherboards on the outside to match the house cladding. On the inside it is plain fibro and they've screwed it straight to the steel beam. They just used corner trims to cover the edges. You can see the screw heads and it isn't the prettiest, but now that all that area is finished off and painted it really isn't noticeable.
