Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 24, 2011 10:55 pm Hi Guys, Anyone else having issue with your internet speed? I am on an ADSL plan with bigpond and the speed are slower than 56Kbps at times. Customer Support tells me there are congestion issues which requires upgrade at the exchange and they are aware but they can't do anything about it and they have no clue when this will be repaired. Anyone else having the same issue? To do it single handedly.. seriously.. its a PAIN! Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 2Feb 25, 2011 9:03 am We have issues here in Mernda, going through Internode. Speeds can get quite slow in evenings and weekends. When we first moved in it was unbearable, but it's now ok most of the time. If all else fails I'm sure you can cancel any contract you have with no penalty, given the poor service, and try another ISP. If you want to see which ISP you are statistically least likely to complain about, check this graph: http://www.roymorgan.com/news/press-rel ... ersion=yes Metricon Riva 33 - http://herlihy-riva.blogspot.com Site start 15/03/2010 - Handover 23/12/2010 9 months and 8 days (284 calendar days) from site start to handover Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 3Feb 25, 2011 9:08 am We were with Vodafone until end Jan, and had no issues with speed or drop outs. Now we're with Telstra mobile broadband, speed is considerably slower, and constantly drops out Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 5Feb 25, 2011 1:03 pm Vodafone wireless broadband at our old place in South Morang was AWFUL! Such as waiting 15 minutes to load vodafone's website. In Mernda it's better but often totally unusable. It's the kind of service you would expect from free wifi, not from a paid service. They've waived any cancellation fees on our contract. Waiting for a revised bill and a letter of apology. Received a text apology on Friday! Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 8May 05, 2011 5:01 pm Sorry to bump this old thread but I thought I'd chime in with some information. The area around Doreen and Mernda has its ADSL serviced by the Mernda telephone exchange. In older suburbs you would have been connected directly to the exchange via copper cable. This is not the case in newer developments. To save money, Telstra install a device called a RIM, your telephone line is connected to this RIM via copper cable and the RIM is then connected back to the Mernda exchange via optical fibre cable called "backhaul", you share this backhaul with everyone else in your area. The situation in Doreen/Mernda at the moment is that Telstra has chronically under-provisioned the backhaul in the area and as a result it's getting very congested in those RIMS. A good sign that you're having congestion is that if you internet is slow during peak times (6pm to Midnight), but quite fast at other times. The bad news is that there's not much you can do about this. Telstra are under no duress to upgrade these services and at this stage might even wait for the National Broadband Network instead of upgrading. A good ISP will let you out of a contract in these circumstances but it won't do much good as you are stuck with your RIM no matter what ISP you choose. Wireless is your next option although it is more expensive and subject to signal strength issues. Telstra keep a list of equipment that is scheduled for upgrade here (Mernda's exchange code is "MRDA"). http://telstrawholesale.com/products/do ... e_list.xls But as to what equipment you're personally connected to, it's difficult to tell. My advice to anyone in this situation is to drop to the lowest price plan on your ISP and try to live with it, that way you don't lose your spot on the Exchange and you don't spend a lot money. Quite a few RIMS in the area have no free ports so being totally without internet is a possibility if you elect to drop your ISP. Of course if we could get enough people together we might be able to lobby the council or local government, but they may not be able to do anything anyway. Just to Clarify: Telstra is the only company that has ADSL equipment installed at the Mernda exchange, if you have ADSL your provider is leasing the equipment from Telstra and you will be subject to any congestion issues Telstra has. Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 9May 06, 2011 7:38 am When I first posted here my connection was fine, but it's gotten worse, especially during peak times. Internode told me that September 2011 is the ETC for the Mernda/Doreen congestion issue to get fixed. In the meantime we get huge variation in congestion levels, sometimes unusable and sometimes not. It's always good in the morning, but it's the evening when trouble starts. This is why I went pre-paid, I will have low usage and will only upgrade to ADSL/2/Fibre once the infrastructure has been upgraded. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Build Thread Re: Internet Speed Issues in Doreen 11Jun 21, 2011 12:22 pm Internode just SMS'd me to say that congestion issue has been resolved! I have to say I haven't noticed any serious congestion problems lately, so they may well be right. However since then it has dropped again to unusable levels. If you missed out then the bad news is that the next scheduled upgrades for Mernda are Jan and March 2012. By that stage I will have been approaching almost two years with unusable internet. If you're having this issue I urge you to report it to your ISP.
