We are buidling a house that has had that problem and the company we are building with has not been very helpful in helping us resolve this issue. Re: Stolen Electricity 4Feb 13, 2011 11:11 pm The amount of power used by trades on a building site is miniscule compared to the power use of an inhabited house. You'd probably have to have every house being built in the street running of your power board to really cost you big $$$. My mate owns the house in front of mine and I know that he and his trades have been connecting into my site power because it is easier than running leads back inside his house while he has been renovating. I also know that my new meter has hardly ticked over. Is it worth worrying about, probably not. Doesn't yours? Re: Stolen Electricity 7Feb 15, 2011 6:42 am I have to pay the water bill, not sure about electricity yet.. Re: Stolen Electricity 8Feb 15, 2011 7:18 am If it's a builder from a neighbouring site and your house is established - call your energy company to order a power industry lock - only the meter reader and you have a key After 4 years - we're in! As soon as you sign the dotted line they really dont want to know you!!! I hope its not the same for everyone but that is what I have found so far!! The company you are building with probably doesn't want to know because they do it too and as other posters have said, usually your building company covers the cost during the build. The other site may not have power connected yet, and the options become to hire a generator (and potentially pass that cost on to the client) or leave the site until power is on. There's a real what goes around coems around mentality with this type of stuff. Most of the builders use each others power/water etc, etc so they aren't too concerned about it as it all evens out. We had the chippies from next door using our power for five or six days. There was definitely no noticable difference in our usage. There's so many big issues to worry about during the course of a build, to be honest this probably isn't one of them. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Stolen Electricity 10Feb 15, 2011 11:56 am Hi, I had a similar problem when building with DFH a few years ago. With DFH we had to pay for the power costs during the build. My brother turned up to check on the progress of the house one day and found a long extension lead going from our place to where another home was being built 3 blocks down. He spoke to the contractor that was working on site, and said he was told by the building company to use power from another site if their building company had one close by (which they didn't). So he was instructed to use power from a home being built by another builder. When my brother explained to the contractor that normally it would not be a problem, but the owners actually pay for the power with DFH he rang the building company again and they apologised and said they would arrange for a generator to be sent out the following day. My brother told the contractor he could continue to use our power until the generator arrived the following day. We didn't have any problems with them another that. It may be worth speaking with the building company who is stealing your power as they may also be unaware that the owner is footing the bills during construction. Thankfully we have no one building along our part of the street only behind us and a block over so it would be difficult to run a power lead that far Jason Building a modified Platinum MKII with Blueprint Homes.
