Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 03, 2011 9:03 am Hi, I have a 1950's double-brick house with internal walls made from standard 110mm wide brick with 13mm render per side (total width of internal wall = 136mm). However, the rendered bathroom walls on the second floor measure about 100mm wide. Measuring under the skirting board of the bathroom wall as it continues into the hall (carpet removed and polished floor now) I measure the unrendered part of the wall as about 76mm wide. I've looked at the Austral site and I can't find any bricks that are 76mm wide. So my question is, how on earth were these thin walls made? Does anybody know if there is such a thing as a narrow brick? I note that 76mm is about 3 inches, maybe that was a standard once? Were thin walls like this common for bathrooms? Were standard bricks layed on their side? Final thought is that this wall was probably unsupported on the floor beneath originally, so maybe they had to make it lighter? Really appreciate any ideas or experiences people have had. Thanks. Re: Bathroom walls mysterious width 2Feb 03, 2011 1:25 pm I really have no idea as I am in the east where they don't normally do double bricks, and my house is BV. But it does strike me that 76mm is the height of our bricks. could they have laid the bricks sideways?? or, perhaps they make special skinny bricks for thin walls? Re: Bathroom walls mysterious width 3Feb 03, 2011 1:56 pm Although its unusual these days to see bricks laid on edge it wasn't always the case. There is even a special cavity wall technique for bricks laid on edge called Rat Trap see the link. Its quite a good bond for brick retaining walls as you can add reinforcement. http://www.gharexpert.com/a/ashishbatra ... ond_0.aspx The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Bathroom walls mysterious width 5Feb 14, 2011 12:49 pm Brick on edge is very common for internal walls during the fifties because of the obvious cost savings Thanks again for this information.
