That doesn't seem to make much sense. My windows are just written as 1800x2400 on my plans which indicates that the windows are 1.8m deep and 2.4m wide. Possibly your window is a 1200mm deep window 2100mm wide with a 3 leaf bifold (which I assume means when you open the windows it turns into an "N" sort of shape). If this explanation seems to match what you have on you plans then I may be right. Also if your plans have the windows shown like the image below: You could try to scale the width of the drawing and see if that matches one of the numbers in the window description. Good Luck. Re: How do I work out the window measurements on my plan? 5Feb 01, 2011 11:44 am With the plans you should also have been given a window schedule which has all the measurements of the actual glazing but does not include the widths of the architraves so don't forget to add these to the dimensions if you want/need the total window sizes Re: How do I work out the window measurements on my plan? 6Feb 01, 2011 12:32 pm EdwinaMcG With the plans you should also have been given a window schedule which has all the measurements of the actual glazing but does not include the widths of the architraves so don't forget to add these to the dimensions if you want/need the total window sizes Not quite right... most plans don't have a window schedule. The architraves have nothing to do with window sizes. Some windows have what is known as an offset reveal - so the inside opening is 20mm bigger all round that the outside (ours are parallel). But all sizes on plans are nominal, and the window supplier takes these to closest standard size - unless requested otherwise. We do a lot of preplanning of projects with clients from plans using window schedules (we have found all the big builders always have one to accompany the floorplans) maybe it is something you have never needed to use Ed as you come into the project at a different stage from me Now days we find our consumer is much more educated & likes to plan out all details in advance to make sure they can get what they want in the end. However there are still plenty of people who don't and therefore from them one of the biggest complaints we hear is from clients who want shutters but have not planned with ourselves & the builder to have big enough reveals to house them as well as winders etc and clients can be very disappointed when they have had this image of something they want & how they expect it to look and not be able to get it Re: How do I work out the window measurements on my plan? 8Feb 03, 2011 12:03 pm EdwinaMcG Well I suppose none of us asked Cheerupcharlie what he needed the dimensions for - I was looking purely from a window furnishings perspective where things like the architraves are quite an important part of the windows & do need to be included esp if you want the dimensions for quotes on window furnishings , whereas it may be something else that he just needs the actual glass size. We do a lot of preplanning of projects with clients from plans using window schedules (we have found all the big builders always have one to accompany the floorplans) maybe it is something you have never needed to use Ed as you come into the project at a different stage from me The major project builders almost never have window schedules. You are more likely to see this on commercial developments or architects plans - but again not always. We always refer to a window schedule if one was present, but we always check this against the plans as mistakes are common, and we must ensure that the necessary standards and regulations are applied, and this can only be done if we know the precise location of each window and door. In fact there are often errors between plans and elevations as well which we resolve on the run. From a window furnishing point of view, you should not work from plans for window measurements to produce furnishings, but you can of course quote from plans, as we do, this is because plans will almost never correspond with what is supplied dimensionally. Plans show nominal sizes, manufacturers supply their closest standard size, and in concrete panels for example, the windows are custom measured to suit each actual opening as tolerances can be quite wide. Furthermore, we would also walk through the windows and doors with the client and discuss aesthetics of configurations and costs related to window types and sizes, so differences can be quite marked in the end result compared to the plans. If you need to accurately work out window furnishings prior to completion, you really need the suppliers window schedule, but it's still safest to measure the finished product in situ, as you say you need to take into account architraves, and the finished tolerances. I mentioned the difference between inside and outside measurements for windows because the measurements on plans are always outside measurements, so inside measurements can be 40mm bigger with many domestic aluminium windows. Reveal sizes are dictated by the type of construction and the window, but there would be no reason why they could not be deeper if that was required, but they would then stick out into the room.
