Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 30, 2011 10:10 am I've read a few conflicting articles about First Flush diverters - some say it's great, others say it's not worth it. I've got a wet/charged system so rather than get about 12 of these things for each downpipe, I'd opt to get a single one at the water inlet pipe to the rainwater tank. But my thoughts are, that by this stage, the dirt/crud has already been washed off the roof and into the downpipes anyway where it will most likely settle unless a mass volume of water pushes it through. I use the rainwater for toilets, washing machine and garden and there's already a filter attached but if a first flush diverter increases the life of the filter, then I'm sure it will pay itself off over time. But, is it worth it for a wet/charged system? Does it really help remove more of the crud before it enters the tank? I've already got leaf guard in all of the gutters, and there's the usual mesh over the top of the tank to prevent large material entering it. I was told to remove the fabric bag from within the tank because it simply became clogged with dirt and water would overflow from the top of the tank...which makes me think that perhaps a first flush diverter might be worthwhile?? Re: Is a First Flush diverter worth it for a wet/charged sys 2Jan 30, 2011 10:52 am We have the wet charged system here, at the end of winter I remove the screw cap at the lowest point in a thing called the 'pig pit' and drain all the water from the system. Then when the rain is on its way, the system 'free flows' until I decide the runoff is clean enough to collect. The collected rain water is the only water we have access to... There is a filter on the house side of the water tank and that is it. We do have lots of trees nearby but a bit of maintenance takes care of this. We don't use gutter guard.. found it clogged up too soon and made it tough to clean the gutters. We have been here for more than 20 years and the kids managed to survive ok on it... Many visitors even commented how nice the water was. First flush collars are a nice units...But I couldn't justify the cost for each downpipe. Sorry I can't recommend one or the other so best to rely on comments… 5 3269 |
