Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 24, 2011 9:38 am Hi All, I am looking for advice on a way to best impliment a privacy screen. Have a length of fence between our neighbours house & ours where we look through windows at each other. The length in question in about 3 m. I think my wife & I put the 'cart before the horse' so to speak & purchased s cheap 'bamboo' style screen ( 3m x 1.8 m ) Now that we have this screen, how is the best way to attach it to the fence line? From what I can see, we will only need about 800 mm of the 1.8 high screen to overhang the top of the fence. Would it be recommended to make a treated pine frame that sandwiches it to the existing fence? Or would it be better to dig some posts into the ground & attach? Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 2Jan 24, 2011 10:02 am I don't know if it's the best way, but this is what we did: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I don't think I have any pics of the progress, but we used three treated pine posts, concreted into the ground, and then added some cross-pieces for a framework (don't ask me what size, I have no idea). The reed screen was then stapled to the frame. We used a decking oil on the posts, more for aesthetic appeal than anything, and a clear sealer on the bamboo to avoid it fading to that nasty grey-white colour over time. Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 3Jan 24, 2011 11:34 am Thanks! I quite like what you have done. May be a good way to solve our problem. I like the fact that having the posts allow possibility of changing the material of the screen in future if need be. Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 4Jan 24, 2011 12:05 pm Just remember that many councils have a maximum height level that you can install any fence / privacy screen to without their approval. If it exceeds that height and the neighbour complains you will be made take it down until all the normal course of application is approved. Some things are worth waiting for. This is something to keep in mind for an idea we have planned also. Thanks for posting the pics kek. HHCIB Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 7Jan 24, 2011 2:51 pm Thanks KEK. Really like what you have done. Looks like you even have the same fence to house distance that I am dealing with. Luckily, we are quite friendly with our neighbours & both keen to do something to add privacy. For us, we only need to block out one single window. I will have to review any potential screening height as I imagine we will need to go about 2400 off the ground. Thanks for all the advice everyone! Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 8Jan 24, 2011 3:35 pm Our fence is 1800mm high, and privacy wasn't a big issue for us - we could only see the tops of the neighbours' windows, and they had a similar view. It was more about creating a more attractive view from our lounge windows than just the fence. Our council website only mentions permits applicable to boundary fences (over 2m), but nothing about screens or fences within a property. Since our screen is on our property, we didn't bother making any further enquiries. Although we did check that our neighbours wouldn't have any objections first. I think the distance from house to fence is about 1400mm from memory. We have a far more impressive, professionally-built screen on the other side of our yard. You'd need some decent DIY skills to do something along these lines though: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Advice on privacy screen / fence extension 9Aug 09, 2011 9:40 pm very nice KEK... we are looking at doing something similar to the professionally built one however on a much smaller scale (about 2.4m width). The question I have is whether anyone knows the legality of using the existing fence posts to hang the screen on?
