Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 23, 2011 8:13 pm Hi folks We currently have a deck but we are not happy with the size of it and are thinking of extending it. Given that the existing deck is already there to work with and we can use that to 'copy' the method or to work with in terms of levels etc, I am wondering how easy it would be to DIY extend it?? We have never attempted anything like this but we need to re-landscape our entire yard and are going to be on a tight budget so need to do as much as we can ourselves. Is it an easy/medium/hard DIY job (keep in mind, extension only- not starting from scratch). Thanks. Re: Extending a deck... But right now, we have a beautiful deck. Thanks to my brother in law. Re: Extending a deck... DIY-able?? 5Jan 24, 2011 8:17 am I agree with the foundations, inspect the previous work carefully as once you start adding on you are pretty well bound by levels and locations of joists and bearers etc. If the current deck is strong and suits your needs and you are happy, give it a try, decks are certainly not too hard. Just do your planning first. I would screw down the deck boards rather than nail them. I extended a deck and completely re topped it, at my parents place last year. Thankfully they like it. Re: Extending a deck... DIY-able?? 6Jan 24, 2011 1:55 pm Thank you very much for all of your responses and tips - very greatly appreciated. I think between the encouragement shown here, and some step by step instructions on the net (and our existing deck as a starting point), we might be able to give it a go. jakencb.... yes, our current deck is strong/sturdy/in good condition (less than 12 months old - previous owners did it to sell but didn't do it big enough for our liking) so we are happy to extend as opposed to rebuilding from scratch. And, it is screwed with deck screws so we will continue with those - thanks for the tip though. Any other advice or tips very welcome.
