Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 23, 2011 8:08 pm Hi folks We have a fairly new guttering/downpipe system (was installed not long before we bought the house).... but, we are going to paint the outside of our house sometime in the next 12-18months and in doing so, might need to change the colours of the downpipes/guttering. Is it possible to paint downpipes/gutters?? And if so, do you need to sand them back or can you just paint over them? As I said, they are new so they don't 'need' sanding as such (ie, there are no flakey bits). They are not colourbond. HHCIB Re: Painting guttering/downpipes 2Jan 24, 2011 11:06 am So long as the surface you are painting is clean it should be OK. Not sure about guttering, but I've always cleaned internal walls with a sugar soap solution (water down sugar soap, then a wet cloth to remove residue) If you are going from a dark color to light then may need 3 or 4 coats. Any good paint store should be able to advise you of what you'll need to do. If you can get a sample of the guttering and take it to them even better. HHCIB Re: Painting guttering/downpipes 4Jan 24, 2011 5:00 pm We painted the spouting and downpipes at our old place - they were just painted zincalume, not colorbond. As long as the paint isn't flakey, all you should need to do is wash them down and let them dry before painting. If they're scratched or there's any flaking paint, you'll need to do a bit of sanding first to get a nice smooth surface. Re: Painting guttering/downpipes 5Jan 24, 2011 6:19 pm Thanks guys. Yes I called the paint shop today, given ours are colourbond coated, they did confirm that they can be painted. They suggested (if in good nick) just to lightly rub with a green kitchen scourer to give some 'grip' to the current surface, then apply a 3-in-1 primer/undercoat, then paint away. I'll double check all of that when we actually go to the shop to get started. But bottom line is it can be done (he asked if zincalume or colourbonded so not sure of the process for zincalume but Kek, you were obviously successful). chrisandkate - yes, we too always use sugarsoap for cleaning walls prior to painting. Will keep this in mind for the gutters although I am thinking just some water will do the trick on those?? And we will be going darker if anything - they are currently white. Thanks for all your input. HHCIB Re: Painting guttering/downpipes 6Jan 24, 2011 7:00 pm A professional painter told me that sugar soap was a waste of time and money... I used it once on kitchen walls that were a bit greasy, but never bothered with other rooms and had no dramas. Re: Painting guttering/downpipes 7Jan 24, 2011 7:47 pm Agree Kek... it is good for kitchens or anywhere with a bit of a buildup... but if walls are relatively clean, just some warm soapy water would be fine I should think.
