Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 10, 2011 8:46 am Just have a question regarding installation of light fittings. We have mostly downlights but will have some feature fittings in the dining area (1), kitchen (3), lounge (1), and bedrooms (4) will all have fittings also, and the front of the house (4). Just wondering what if the builder would have the electrician install them when fitting the battens to save having it done after handover? Also is having light fittings stolen from a nearly finished home something you would worry about? I know sometimes things get stolen (doors, bifold doors, hot water services), would they take light fittings? If they do install them and they go walkabout, they may walk away and say as it's not in the contract, it's not their responsibility. For peace of mind, I'd wait until after handover, and then get an electrician back to put them up for you. Re: Light fittings installed by builder? 3Jan 10, 2011 10:02 am We got all our lights and the builder told us to have them ready by such a date and in the house ready for the electrician to fit. Some lights were very very tricky to put together and we were expecting to be charged extra by the electrician (we expected to do so) however we didn't. We know the builder so that helped and the electrician was very good. Re: Light fittings installed by builder? 4Jan 10, 2011 11:08 am Light fittings would be fiddly to steal. I approached our builder and they charged a fortune - about $35 per light. I hired a sparky at $450 a day after handover to do it. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Light fittings installed by builder? 5Jan 10, 2011 11:17 am We had to source/pay for all our own light fittings through our builder and we got charged $65.00 per light point and that included the actual fitting of any light we chose. We got a phone call a few days prior to the electrican starting the electrical work so we knew the exact day they were starting the electrical fitout, so DH and I brought our lights over there first thing that morning. We also marked on the front of the boxes of all our lights and fans which room they were to be installed in and then on the morning that we delivered them to the house we actually put them in the correct rooms at the house to save the electricans sorting them out for us as we had specifc downlights we wanted in say our bedroom and the media room to the ones throughout the centre of our house. We were told during our electrical walkthrough, any lights that we don't supply at the time of our electrical fitout, then the electrican just fits a batten fitting. So the $65.00 per light point was pretty good considering most of our house is down lights and they fitted all the lights for us. We also have 2 chandeliers and they didn't charge any extra for assembling and fitting those either. Re: Light fittings installed by builder? 6Jan 10, 2011 12:07 pm If you have pendant lights and stuff, remove the pendant itself from the box to make it less obvious that the light is worth stealing. Or just provide the part that fits into the ceiling to save them time as well. Also, for chandiliars and pendant lights, remember to specify the height you want them hung (perhaps mark where you want them to cut the wire). The unit normally clips into a metal plate screwed to the wall, either plate is not flush, or unit not hooked in and could be hanging from the pipes partly, either might… 2 15800 Hi - thanks for your reply.
