Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 07, 2007 5:49 pm Hi everyone,
Some friends are thinking of moving to Point Cook or Sanctuary Lakes in Melbourne's west, as house prices seem quite reasonable. Does anyone have any info on what it's like living there? They will work in central Melbourne. How long does the commute to Melbourne CBD by car take? Is public transport good? Shopping? Any other issues or opinions, good or bad? Eimaj Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 2Dec 07, 2007 6:20 pm We used to live there and loved it It is around 15-20 mins to the city in non-peak hour, it almost doubles that in peak hour sometimes though. There is a new town centre being built in Point Cook which should improve shopping and dining in the area. Altona beach is only 10 mins away and the surf coast is only 1 hour. There are quite a few good catholic/private and public schools in the area.
Hope this helps ! Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 4Dec 08, 2007 11:26 am Hi there,
Check out a recent discussion on this topic, which should help... https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=326 Personally, I am just moving away from the area to live closer to the city. It's good for young couples/families - prices are reasonable, it's close to the beach, and not too far from the city. However, as I grew older and wanted to go out more in the city, I found this a constant frustration. A cab ride costs around $55 to the city - and even a cab to the closest sign of nightlife in Willi is expensive. Driving to the city isn't too bad if it's not in peak hour. Should take around 25 mins or so. But peak hour isn't so good - need to allow for around an hour (the westgate is such a nightmare). Having said that, compared to the other housing estates around (ie. Caroline Springs), I think Pt Cook has the most to offer. If you can afford Sanctuary lakes - definately choose that over Pt Cook. The facilities are great (i.e. gym membership) and it feels safe and serene. Another concern with these estates is that they look lovely now - very modern. But give it 10-15 years, what will they look like?? Also - a problem with living in Sanctuary Lakes is the distance to the closest train station. It's not worth driving to Aircraft (the closest), and this is zone 2, so more expensive. So the next one on is Laverton, and in order to make the 8:16 train in the morning, I have to leave home at 7:45. Annoying! Anyway, I hope I've helped shed some light! Mel Really depends what you're looking for I guess! Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 7Dec 08, 2007 1:08 pm We are really happy in Tarneit too and it cost approx $60k less to build here then Point Cook.
We built in Point Cook/Seabrook 10 years ago and sold 8 months ago. It is improving as time goes on. Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 9Dec 08, 2007 4:01 pm It's about a 15 min drive.....the only drawback is that whilst bus services are good, there is no nearby train station, although Hoppers Crossing and Werribee stations are about an equal distance away.
We have never worried about getting cabs from the city as if we are having a 'big' night out we jump on the nightrider and get home for about $15 (bus fare plus cab from Werribee). There is a great local shopping centre with Coles, Aldi, The Warehouse etc....Werribee Plaza is only 10 mins drive away and I would say as Tarneit grows more and more facilties will be built. Thanks Rellie, good to know Hey, your house looks GREAT - checked out your blog. Enjoy Christmas in your new home Eimaj Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 11Dec 08, 2007 4:26 pm Hi eimaj, we are in Tarneit at the moment. I grew up in Werribee so I know the areas pretty well - although there are a lot of new estates! We find that Tarneit is pretty close to everything. It's <5 mins from us to "the Plaza", 8 mins to Werribee train station, 10 mins to Werribee main street. There are buses that go to most parts of Werribee, Hoppers and Tarneit too.
They are trying to improve access for Pt Cook-Freeway (Palmers Rd) but it will likely still be a slow ride up Aviation Rd in peak hour traffic. Then, if you left from both locations at the same time, you'd probably be slightly better off from Pt Cook, but getting onto the highway may equal that out. Pt Cook will be slightly dearer to buy into than Tarneit. Pretty much the same facilities available to both - although "the Plaza" would be better shopping than Sanctury Lakes or Central Square (lots more shops in the one spot). Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 13Dec 08, 2007 6:24 pm Just reading through and had to add that Point Cook will soon have its own train station - will be just near the new Palmers Rd. Also the Pt Ck shopping centre is due to open in early 2008 with Target, Aldi etc + (and this is where I get excited) a couple of bars! Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 14Dec 08, 2007 11:25 pm We're moving to Point Cook once our house is finished.
We love the place because of its easy access to the freeway. We're a few steps away from the commercial centre that Trina was talking about. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! What's that got to do with living in Pt Cook or Tarneit? Plus, with water restrictions banning watering of lawns, those not already established have got no hope. Plus, who's going to be rolling around on it at a display home? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 17Dec 10, 2007 10:35 am we live in pt cook now. while it's not as fancy as our previous house (chadstone), it's the best we can afford. It's quite, a bit windy, close to everything (coles, bunnings, etc). so yeah, we'are happy. traffic wise, i think it's alright, we always manage to get 8.19am train from laverton. Point Cook 18Dec 12, 2007 8:58 pm We are also in Point Cook and couldn't recommend it highly enough. I work in the city and leave about 7.20 and get into the office about 8.30, thus I don't recommend it if you want to drive to work!
Rellie, I think you would find if you were to buy now, there would not be 60k in it between Point Cook and Tarneit - Tarneit is booming at the moment! (So is Point Cook but Tarneit is really starting to take off as people discover where it is) Re: Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes 20Dec 13, 2007 3:30 pm eimaj,
15-20 min by car is correct, however is assuming little traffic. It reaches an hour or so in peak times (Pt Cook Rd can be a shocker to get out of) plus the usual freeway traffic. The new on ramp should relieve some pressure off of Pt Cook Rd but unfortunately the Freeway traffic is probably the bulk of the wait. Building Standards; Getting It Right!
