Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 3Jan 02, 2011 8:12 pm I am one of the 50 but I too would like an answer as we are building and do not know whether to go to the bother of getting a niche or not so hopefully someone will answer that knows something! Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 4Jan 03, 2011 10:11 am I don't have a niche, but I have an opinion My first thought was that 1.75m is taller than me, so a mirror at that height would seem a little strange. It also seems very high above a bed head - what do you do with the space between the top of the bedhead and the niche? I think it would look strange to hang something on the wall in that space, but the space seems too big to leave blank. I would be looking at having the niche moved lower in the wall. Good luck. Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 5Jan 03, 2011 11:39 am I chose not to do niches in any bedrooms - I feel they limit you to where you can position things. We have a massive king size bed which has a huge bedhead. No way would a niche fit - as it is we chose a slim long wall hanging thingo (LOL) to go above the bedhead instead. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 6Jan 03, 2011 5:50 pm I don't have a niche, but if I did I think I'd like it to be reachable from a sitting position in bed to use as a kind of shelf. I picture some tealight candles which you could blow out just before you nodded off. noice "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. If you do want one, I would opt to place it lower down, as you would find it much more user friendly - I guess the idea is to make use of it whilst you are in bed - put night time reading, or similar there - if you had to get up and out of bed to reach it would kind of defeat the purpose...? Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 8Jan 03, 2011 8:49 pm Metri'con did heaps in their displays and most of them were at that higher height. I'd prefer it at the higher height if it was me for a few reasons. They are not deep enough to hold books etc, more for permanent display items, so access isn't really an issue if that's the type of stuff you'd have in it. Secondly.... without getting too graphic with a mirror in it.... I'm not sure there's things I'd like to see in it... if you know what I mean. Unless you're into that type of thing. And what height are your ceilings? I'd take that into consideration as well. Here's a pic of a higher one from the M'con website. Not sure of the exact height, looks around 1.5m. http://www.metricon.com.au/melbourne/ho ... images#463 Edit to add.... just realised the pic shows a cut-out rather than a niche... but same effect in essence. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 12Jan 06, 2011 10:31 am We will have a niche in the master bedroom. Plans show bottom of niche at 1200mm. Dimentions of niche 2300mm wide x 450mm high x 180mm deep. We have recessed downlights and will use these in place of bedside lamps. For an image, see Carlisle website- Monaco, or our blog has display images as a page option. Hope that helps. Building Carlisle Homes "Monaco" @ The Avenue at Casey What's happening?... We are planning on having a mirror in the space too. Do you think ours is too high? We are having a window above our bed and that's roughly where the window sits. I don't think it would be too high to use for display objects, but it certainly wouldn't be practical to use as a bookshelf or for mood candles to be blown out by someone in the bed. The trouble with niches is finding exactly the right thing to go in the space - but then again, shopping for that perfect thing for the space can be lots of fun! I wouldn't put a mirror or a painting in a niche as they are essentially 2D objects and the niche adds a 3rd dimension to a 2D wall. I would be looking for a slim sculpture or cohesive group of slim objects to fit the space and enhance the feeling of depth. Kylie Re: Niche above bed in master bedroom 15Jan 16, 2011 11:28 am Cool. Can be a nice feature to have in a master bedroom. If the work has been done, i wonder if a picture or it can be taken and posted here. Thank you so much. This has been very helpful.
