Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 31, 2010 2:56 pm I have been meaning to ask the question on here for a little while but i have been looking at purchasing a iRobot vacumme cleaner for our new place. Now, we are clean people, no pets inside, no shoes either, just food crumbs from the boys and dust. With the new house being substantially larger to what i am use to im dreading the vacumming and though one of these may be the answer. Has anyone got one? What are the pros and cons? I could go on, but in short don't waste your money - the novelty wears off pretty quickly, I was lucky my mate owns an electrical store so I returned it for a refund. You will still have to run over a fair portion of the area with a standard vaccuum, which IMO defeats the purpose of having the robot do it.......for the price get a dyson or miele which is infinitely better. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 4Jan 01, 2011 8:16 am I've wanted one for ages and we were at Joyce Mayne the other day and they had them on special ... down to around $240. Got all excited and so pressed the button to see it running and big thumbs down to the noise! I wanted one to run through the night but there is no way I could, it was noisy in the store, can only imagine it amplified at night in a quiet house. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 5Jan 01, 2011 9:36 am RaryGirl for that price I assume it wasn't the iRobot Roomba brand? My SIL has a Roomba and it's not noisy, and she loves it. I am hoping to get one for the new (big) house after we build, but my DH thinks thinks they are a rort! It was the iRobot Roomba brand ... reduced for the after Christmas sale. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 8Jan 01, 2011 9:57 am Pinchy Wow, I've never seen them that cheap! Neither had I ... that's why I was so excited, I was keen to get one then and there until I heard it running. Still keen on the scooba though ... I want to see/hear it running, I'd happily vacuum if something else does the mopping! ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 10Jan 01, 2011 10:14 am Pinchy RaryGirl, do you know which model it was? I can't find it in the Joyce Mayne catalogue online. Although, don't know how I'd go getting one anyway as I'm in Vic! No I can't remember I'm sorry, but I assume is was the very base model, when I saw it running I said to my hubby it's probably a superseded model and that's why it was reduced so much. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 11Jan 01, 2011 10:35 am You're probably right, thanks for the info. My SIL ordered hers from the US, even with postage and a new Australian power supply it was cheaper than retail here! Terrible design - moving parts should not be made of plastic. When mine dies, I'm not replacing it. These are NOT suitable for carpeted floors! They pick up a lot of fluff and fill the bins and filters quickly. They need cleaning after EVERY USE even on timber floors on which they do a great job. Best to let them loose when you go out. Have a quick whip around for tissues and any strings, etc. They also get tangled in those plastic chains on bottom of vertical blinds. Don't seem to mark furniture as they have a sensor which slows them down BEFORE striking something. Also if the roller and bin are getting dirty/full, they can drop fluff on edges of rugs. Does a good job on timber floors, BUT you still need a normal vacuum. Recommend one? Only on timber floors, if you like gadgets, if you have $600 to burn, if your'e lazy. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 15Jan 17, 2011 10:59 am I have wanted one of these for years, A little helper that can vacuum around the furniture while I'm out, of course, we forget they need emptying, maintenance, etc etc. Perhaps giving the kid $2 to vacuum the floor is better. Could get almost a years daily vacuuming and keep the money in the family for the price of a roomba. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 16Mar 03, 2011 2:18 pm While I didn't buy a Roomba I did buy another brand and it's just perfect!! No problems going from porcelain tiles, to a thick plush pile floor rug, to carpet, to vinyl planks, it hasn't hesitated, I even found it in the shower a few days ago because I forgot to close the shower screen. Battery life is in excess of 2 hours, in that time my whole house was done the first time and purposely I hadn't vacuumed for 10 days because I wanted a good test. Now, the whole house is done in around an hour and it does an ET and 'goes home'!! It has a remote control and can be programmed to clean while you are at work or the beach, day or night and most importantly it's rather quiet...moreso than I was anticipating. It doesn't bump into furniture, as some have stated, because the sensor detects the obstacle and it turns away. If there were any marks on my furniture/skirtings/etc then it would not be staying here any longer. Stairs are also sensed but I only have one step into the garage and it soon found that and turned around. Under the dining table is a fiddly place to vacuum and I always had to move chairs to vacuum between all those legs, but the robot's long rotating brush means chairs don't have to be moved. Today was a good test because I've just started using brand new deep chocolate coloured bath towels and even though they've been washed several times they are still shedding fluff.....no probs, the robot took care of that too. I've built in an area with black sand and no matter how much you wipe your feet on the doormat before coming into the house there is always a certain amount on the tiles...not any longer, they are cleaned and polished in one easy action. NO...I'm not on commission nor am I connected to a manufacturer or reseller in any way (wish I was though) and I'm not into gimmicks either but do my research before buying anything and make sure it can be returned if not satisfactory in a home based test. This little baby won't be going back, that's for sure! Hope this helps someone with their decision to buy. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 18Mar 05, 2011 10:18 am The one I bought is a xxxxxxxxxxxxx
There are many places selling robot vacuums some may/may not be better than others, but as per my previous post this is the only one I've used and am really happy with the results and can't see how stores can sell the same machine for 3-4 times the price. Hope this helps? ....edited to delete seller info due to non-reply of a warranty issue. I will only leave honest feedback and at the moment not happy with their service. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 19Mar 07, 2011 8:56 pm HappyCamper, I've just won one of the robot vacuums from Dreamrider for $193.60. Does it take a bag or do you just empty a container and how often do you need to do this? Are there any other consumables that it takes? You said in another post that you use the microfibre cloth for you tiles. Do you have many tiles? Our house is all tiles except for the bedrooms. Re: Has anyone got a iRobot Roomba Vacumme cleaner 20Mar 07, 2011 9:36 pm Congratulations...I hope you like it as much as I do!! That's still below their BIN price and the saving covers postage costs. No bag, it has an easily removed cassette that you just empty into the bin. When mine goes back to recharge I remove the cassette, empty and reinsert it so it's ready to go the next time. In saying that, it's not full to capacity but like any vacuum cleaner it works better when the bag/cassette/etc is not choked with fluff/dust/etc and as it's so easy to empty it's not really a chore. The only consumables you'll need will be 2 x D size batteries if you want to use the virtual wall and 2 x AAA for the remote control. I didn't have any batteries on hand and live too far from stores to warrant a special trip, so I just roll a towel or close a door to stop it going somewhere it's not wanted and use the touch screen on the cleaner to set it going. As soon as you receive the robot put it on the charger so you can try it out asap. There is a little reservoir on top of the charger to place a few drops of essential oils which is heated during the charging cycle and makes the house smell lovely. There are two microfibre pads in the box along with a spare filter, a spare rotating brush and a brush/comb to clean the brushes. Do I have many tiles??? LOL.........like you, I only have carpet in the bedrooms and one lounge room, with vinyl planks in the study, the remainder is porcelain tiles in an alabaster colour (living and bathrooms). My block is black sand and no matter how hard you try it still gets inside, although no door opens directly onto carpet, for obvious reasons. This is why I wanted a robot cleaner so I'm not having to vacuum floors every second day, so many better things to do with your time but the robot goes from tiles to carpet to plush floor rug to vinyl planks all without hesitation. If you search YouTube for 'robot vacuum cleaner' there are several to choose from that will give you an idea of what to expect. Don't forget to report back once you've tried it? Who said cleaning floors wasn't fun!!! If so what were the "special circumstances" under which it was granted?
